ok, if I understood OP, CBJ needs bodies to weather the storm willing to cough up later...

how about Rs accommodate, go couple steps back now to be better prepared for POs?

Jones is a lefty, can play righty
Carrick = useful bottom pivot
Reilly Smith - may/may not have veto power, would be top 6 F help
Vesey = useful bottom W
Sykora prospect F
Bryce McConnell Barker prospect F

for

Jenner
CBJ 2025 3rd
return of NYR 2026 4th

rationale for BJs
Jenner is out of commission until POs, practically; will CBJ be in it?
he would be like 2 yr rental, outside chance he'd extend, but COL in the picture if he doesn't
get useful bodies needed
coupla decent prospects

rationale for Rs
We are fine rolling Brodz - Edstrom - Rempe 4th line so Vesey can go
we are sacrificing depth in Carrick + prospects/Jones worth more but we are getting Jenner for POs

I view this as chiefly vet depth for vet depth
Carrick is suitable at a 13th forward, 4th line center at the best

That's also a lot of garbage for Boone Jenner

Never change Bern...I don't know how you could possibly defend that as helping, but damn if you didn't try

Wahlstrom played in the top 6 with the NTDP so that counts to me. Wahlstrom for your best future 8th round pick.

Michael Bunting and Tristan Jarry are both healthy scratched for the Penguins so very much in the Sullivan dog house.

In the spirit of the "elvis merzlikins" clause to get creative:

Bunting
Jarry

For
Merzlikins
Draft pick (maybe 2025 3rd or 2027 2nd)

Jarry has an extra year compared to Merzlikins and Bunting is a mid-round pick at best.

Given that we'd be paying Jarry for one year extra, I'm not a fan of this one. Certainly there would be no pick going back to the Pens.

If Laine didn't get hurt, I'd like to assume that Armia would have already been traded to Cbus by now. Maybe with a 400k retention to make up the difference between cap hit and salary. Seems like it's the perfect fit given your criteria.

Maybe once Laine comes back it could happen. Can't imagine the cost would be much at all.

If he wasn't part of the deal, I would assume he is of no CBJ interest

I'd wonder if there's not a deal to be done on this for Vancouver. They've got wingers, and plenty of "middle-six" types that would probably be entirely expendable for a defenceman like Provorov. His mobility and modicum of puck-moving ability would be pretty welcome on that second pair.

Provorov would also be nice in that his cap number is nice and low with everybody retaining on him already...potentially CBJ even able to retain down even further? But his contract ask beyond this year would probably be a factor to consider as well. Not sure Vancouver would want another "pure rental", even this early in the season where you'd be renting a full year of him.
Definitely interested in Provorov. Hoglander for Provorov@50% seems about right, but I'm not sure I would do it. He's probably our 4th best winger and we'd be left with Pius Suter or Di Guiseppe or something in our top 6 again.
