A lot of teams are going to up against it during the next couple of seasons, and while we're discussing this on the Wings board, I was wondering who might teams be giving up, and what sort of "sweeteners" they might add.

Also, what would you expect in return?

(If this is too vague an ask, please let me know)

Canucks have two RFAs they are going to have trouble signing to deserved raises: Virtanen and Stecher.
I think Benning wants draft picks. He’s said he wants to replace the ones he’s given up in this coming draft.
Would a second and a third be fair for both players’ RFA rights?

Are we talking cap dump, or cap casualty? For me, these are two different things. A cap dump would be someone who more or less isn't at all worth their cap hit, isn't really all that productive, etc. This would be someone like Cory Schneider or Loui Ericksson. You'd likely attach as asset to dump.

A cap casualty would be someone who is actually still productive, maybe even worth their cap hit, but just get squeezed out by powers outside of the control. Killorn, Leddy are good examples of this. These are guys you're not attaching assets to, and should still expect a return on even if you have to sell them at a discount.

So are we talking casualty or dump?

Is Detroit just looking at getting assets for cap dumps or are they looking more at getting solid 2nd line players who need to be moved to free up cap space for what can be described as pennies on the dollar?

Like the prior poster mentioned, I think that there are guys who will be sold at a lower price. Guys like Miller/Burkovsky likely go for less than they did last season. Maybe it's a 2 and 3 for Miller or just a 1, while it is a pair of 3's or something for Burkovsky.

I looked over the Wings cap situation, they need to extend Mantha and Bertuzzi but should still have enough cap space to take on like 3 guys having $5 mill cap hits each to still get to the 23 man roster and remain under the cap.

Is the owner prepared to spend the money to do that as well?

Cap Casualties preferred, but we're open to Cap Dumps for the right sweetener(s) involved...NHL ready prospects & picks. Needs are 2C & Top4 LD, both should be under 25 preferably or younger.

Chris Illitch will spend & Yzerman has full autonomy.

Potentially both, and thank you for asking for clarification. Updated the thread title to reflect.

Kris Russell, 1 year left at 4M, is actually being paid only 1.5M if the Oilers have already paid his 1M bonus, which I think would’ve happened July 1 regardless of the situation, if not happens after playoffs. Still decent enough to bring some veteran leadership for a year and probably play decent minutes there.

Also you can probably have AA back for probably 1 of the 2nds EDM gave.

Wouldn't take AA back for free.

Those guys don't tend to be cap casualties.
Agreed. You are looking at older guys around 30 or so like a Killorn who have a couple of years left on their deals but have been surpassed by other players on the depth chart.

Or you are looking at guys that age who haven't lived up to their contracts like a Burkovsky at a $3.2 mill QO, which Washington wasn't prepared to extend him. Guys like a McCann in Pitt might cost them $3 mill in arbitration which they may not want to keep.

how about just cutting thru needless chatter and getting to the point by listing your ideas for both casualties and or dumps

Joseph and the 3rd are exceedingly uninteresting, would prefer to have 2 seconds or a C prospect coming back with Johnson.

Johnson doesn't have negative value so we have no interest in attaching picks to move him. His value is that of a mid round pick so you can swap the Washington pick for either of your 3rd's and we'll take Joseph and the 3rd out.
