As Red wings fan I just wanted to say you have a more grounded understanding of where the red wings rebuild is than most red wings fans around here.
I’m with you that yzerman wouldn’t want to move Edvinsson. Could they get it done with other pieces?
Lyon/Cossa + Danielson/Kasper + Albert Johanson + Tarasenko? Maybe a pick as well?
I’m not sure if that’s enough to get it done but I see it as:
- either a capable goalie or a high end goalie prospect close to NHL ready.
- a high end young center capable of playing now
- Al Jo might not be a known commodity but he is playing in the NHL and highly regarded by the Red Wings
- salary/an offensive oriented winger to help out the avs 2nd line.
the theory is that while the avs take a step back they add 3 pieces that are nhl ready/pounding on the door and a bunch of salary space to add some other pieces. Obviously the Avs give up the best piece but I believe they would be set up well for the next 3 seasons.
As a fan of any team, it's sometimes difficult to take a step back and see a big picture, so I wouldn't hold it against them too much.
And taking Edvinsson out doesn't really change anything about why I think it's dumb for the Red Wings. They'd still be giving up at least 3 good youngsters who could become mainstays on their roster to upgrade from Debrincat to Rantanen. Will they actually be a better team if they trade for Rantanen, but fill out the rest of the roster with overpriced UFA signings? Or are they a better team with high talent youngsters in as many positions as possible?
I also don't think your offer would get the Avs attention.
-capable goalie prospect isn't a big need because they have Nabokov likely coming over after the season. And Lyon is a 32 year old pending UFA, so he's not even worth considering.
-Kasper and Danielson are both good prospects with potential, but neither one of them really moves the needle that much for me if Rantenen is going the other way. Middle 6 Cs are a dime a dozen. 100 point wingers are not.
-Johansson is interesting too, but again, not the caliber of guy that gets me interested in moving Rantanen.
-Tarasenko isn't in the Avs top 6 if they aren't decimated by injuries, and he's signed to an extra year at $4.75m. No thank you.
