So the Avs are in a bit of a pickle. Their top-6 is decimated by injuries, they're right up against the cap and Mikko is going to be looking for ~$13 million per on his lifetime contract. Avs fans are souring on his inconsistent effort level, but the guy is still considered a top-5 winger in his prime. His value as a rental decreases game by game for obvious reasons, so ideally a sign-and-trade would be in the cards. So, which teams need him and which ones can afford him?

The Avs would be looking for cheaper or cost-controlled impact players. It's also no secret that their goaltending is still a bit of a question mark, despite a solid showing by Justus Annunen so far.

Toss around your proposals for Mikko, be it as a rental or SAT, if possible.

This has all been discussed before. No one is going to offer anything close to what the Avs would need for it to make sense, because the teams that want him today don't have the assets, and the teams that have the assets aren't a Rantanen away from contending.
What if Red Wings start with Edvinsson

Can you explain how this would make sense for the Red Wings? Sure, Rantanen is an upgrade over Debrincat, but Yzerman is still very early in his build, with only Seider and Raymond playing more than 50 games to this point, so giving away the kind of young talent that the Avs would rightfully want in return for their 100+ point winger in his prime seems like an odd choice to me. I think they'd rather keep all their high talent youngsters and upgrade 3-4 spots on their roster over the next couple of seasons, rather than only upgrading their best RW.

Signed Marner for signed Rantanen

In a word - ew.

Hard to see this happening. Is there a team that is very close to being able to win the cup but lack a world class winger AND they also have something like 2 good but cheap-ish players they don't really need + a 1st round pick they don't need? And the cap space for Rantanen's next contract.

Or maybe some sort of a star for a star trade. Top 5 goalie for Rantanen.

I mostly think Rantanen is a Colorado player for life though. Kinda stupid to let a bona fide star player go because of temporary injury problems. The return would have to be very good.

Hypothetical:
Rantanen is very interested in extending with Islanders

Rantanen for Barzal
or
Rantanen + Manson for Barzal + Mayfield

Maybe somebody adds a pick, I don't know

( Islanders are allowed to negotiate and agree to an extension with Rantanen before the trade is finalized, then the trade and extension both happen )

( I am not an Islanders fan )

Given Rantanen's age (as in, not that old - 28), the return for a consistent 100+ point player would need to be significant and "now". So basically only something like McDavid, Barkov, Draisaitl, Matthews... you get the hint already.

The only other option would be a slightly lesser player with a 1st round pick or two, where the top pick candidate is a surefire damage dealer.

Barzal sucks compared to Rantanen

It would need to be Barzal+another big asset for extended rantanen.

Is it realistic that he doesn’t resign? I always assumed it would get done eventually. I don’t know why he would leave.

well my 1st offer would be bribing the NHL to dump the cap and allow players to be bought, then I would offer 100M to the Avs

As Red wings fan I just wanted to say you have a more grounded understanding of where the red wings rebuild is than most red wings fans around here. 😂

I’m with you that yzerman wouldn’t want to move Edvinsson. Could they get it done with other pieces?

Lyon/Cossa + Danielson/Kasper + Albert Johanson + Tarasenko? Maybe a pick as well?

I’m not sure if that’s enough to get it done but I see it as:

- either a capable goalie or a high end goalie prospect close to NHL ready.
- a high end young center capable of playing now
- Al Jo might not be a known commodity but he is playing in the NHL and highly regarded by the Red Wings
- salary/an offensive oriented winger to help out the avs 2nd line.

the theory is that while the avs take a step back they add 3 pieces that are nhl ready/pounding on the door and a bunch of salary space to add some other pieces. Obviously the Avs give up the best piece but I believe they would be set up well for the next 3 seasons.

Lyon, Danielson, Tarasenko + one draft pick for Rantanen may function.
