youppi- what is he supposed to be?

does any one have an idea of what species Youppi is supposed to be? I think 'Le grand orange" might be a muppet, related to elmo cookie monster and the like. Also was it true Youppi was homeless and living on the street for awhile before he was picked up by the Canadiens
