I've been reading through some of the history of canadian junior hockey, and I'm interested in finding out who some of the youngest players were the league has ever seen. I know John Tavares and Jason Spezza played in the OHL at 15, and I was always curious as to why they wouldn't let Crosby play in the Q at 15?

I'm pretty sure Tavares was younger than both Spezza and Fata when he started in the OHL.

I think Bobby Or played at 14 also. I thought I read somewhere that there will be no more exceptions before 16.

Glen Goodall, Seattle, in the mid 80's played a full season at 14.

I never heard of him but checked on hockey database and he turned 15 on January 22 during the season. So he played most of the season as a 14-year-old. Any reasons why he got to play in the WHL so young?

Saw the thread, came here to post Goodall. :)

Goodall should be getting a full pension from the WHL - 6 complete seasons without playing his overage year.

Dave Archibald also played about 10 games at age 14 around the same time for Portland.

Tavares was drafted as a 14 year old (May 05 Draft, September 1990 birthday), but I believe he turned 15 about 4 days before Oshawa's first actual regular season game. Other recent 15 year olds to play in the OHL include Rico Fata and Jason Spezza, who both played under the old rule that allowed exceptional 15 year olds to play for their hometown team, before entering the Priority Selection at the conclusion of the season.

The rule now allows 15 year olds to apply for exceptional entrance (like Tavares), for a fee of $1 000, plus they have to gain approval by an appointed board. John McFarland is the only other known player to try this, in 2007, but was denied.

Players in the WHL can play at Age 15, depending if they are called up, and I believe once their club season is over they're allowed to play games with the WHL team. Mark Pysyk played 14 games or so in his 15 year old season a couple years ago.

So if Crosby played in the Q during the 02-03 season when he was 15-years-old, how do you think he would have done. Possibly lead the CHL in scoring? Possibly CHL player of the year at 15. He had 54 goals,81 Assists,135 Points in 59 games in the QMJHL when he was 16, and when he played at Shuttuck St. Mary's when he was 15 the season before he had 72 Goals,90 Assists,162 points in 57 games.

Let me put it this way. I highly doubt Tavares scored 72 goals if that was his 1st year in junior.

So if we assume that Crosby played in the Q at age 15, his stats as a 16 year old would have likely been higher.

So I would guess about 35 goals, 65 assists for 100 pts in 60 games for Sid

I understand what your saying. So Sid probably gets about 150 points in his 2nd season and possible closer to 200 points during the 04-05 season if it was his 3rd year in the QMJHL.

Kirk Muller...15
Bobby Orr...15
Denis Potvin...14.

Orr played a large chunk (34 games) of the season as 14 year old in 62-63. There's nothing on his hockeydb page because there are no stats for the Oshawa Generals that year at all for some reason:

So Bobby Orr is the youngest that I know of to play in the CHL on a consistent basis. Depending when Potvin's three games came Orr might be the youngest ever to play a game.

Now why Crosby wasn't allowed to play I have no idea, I'm not sure even if he even applied to the QMJHL to play. The way they've done things has changed over the years. Fata and Spezza both got to play for their hometown teams as 15 year olds but then had to enter the draft the following year going first overall to London and Brampton respectively. Tavares entered the draft going first overall to Oshawa as a 15 year old (he was actually 14 at the time).

I was sure of Orr being 14 but then I checked Hockeydb and then posted.....what can you say!!

I just double checked Potvin...born in Oct. 29 1953, played 3 games for Ottawa in 67/68 season. Therefore he could've been 13 if he played prior to Oct 29th.
