Coaches aren't good and bad from year to year like players. Sure coaches evolve over time but a coach is still a good coach even when his team is bad...and the reverse is absolutely also true...a shitty coach is still shitty even when his team is good.

Edit: see Dan Bylsma

Seems like the Devils wanted Zajac out against Eichel.
And he's been getting torched for most of the year by guys like Eichel (not neceesarily him, as this was the first time he's seen him this year) and top competition.

The Zajac we've seen for 20 games is unlike any Zajac we've seen play for the Devils. It's almost like watching his old man play.

It's actually the officials who get to make the call, as they're walked through it by the people in Toronto.

They were like ''Oh no! We need to pretend like we missed it and that it's offsides! We don't wanna hose them again!''.

yeah but officials arent going to turn on eachother on their own. they do what toronto tells them. they were told to overturn the call. we were jobbed. if it happens in april ill be po'ed. this is just reg season hockey.

The lines are perfect the way they are.

Wood - Zacha - Noesen gives Zacha linemates he meshes will with and can grow with. Their style contrasts a bit with the rest of the team which is good as they play a heavier game.

Johansson - Zajac - Palmieri is perfect. Johansson moves the puck up the ice, Palmieri is the power forward, and Zajac is the glue guy. Give it time to gel and it could work nicely.

I dont think Hynes has been bad this year. He sat key players earlier in the season showing that everyone is accountable for their play. Scratched players that maybe shouldnt have been scratched again for accountability. Realized the best 6 D didnt involve Lovejoy and included 2 young players in Santini and Butcher. Yes he maybe pushed Greene and Santini out there to much but at the time he didnt have much else. The Vat trade along with the strong play of Moore have really settled the D down and they have looked much much better. He is allowing young guys like Bratt Nico Coleman Santini Wood and Butcher to play in key parts of the game and have key roles on the team. He took a lot of crap for the way he handled Zacha but its sure looking like it worked.

I believe the PP and PK personnel choices are made by the coaches who handle those units, then again i have never played hockey in my life so maybe i maybe incorrect. But anyway I dont have any issues with Zajac on the PP remember he is also one of the few forwards with a right shot we have and all he does is play outlet in the center of the ice. Its not like he is running the PP, also there arent may forwards on this team better then Zajac at digging pucks out on the boards or stronger on the boards overall.

I think the handiness plays a part in why we don’t see the PP roll outs we want. Someone would have to be on their off hand and that wouldn’t be ideal either.

We simply don’t have many quality right handed options for the PP. All our best forwards are lefties.

I have seen the same Zajac for his entire career. He was a knee-jerk Lamoniello botch contract.
He has always played with the best of the best wingers, remember that.

I would still trust Zajac defending one-on-one more than any other forward on this roster, poor year included.

It wasn't.

They just didn't wanna hear Lehner ***** for the second game in a row.

Don't get me wrong, we were very playing very poorly in that period. The shift right before (between the tying goal and that non-goal) we got pinned in our end and almost got scored on again. So I'm not convinced that goal would have meant a regulation win, but it still should have been a goal I think.

He made a smart ass remark about this in his post game too. f*** him.

That's why I say that I don't think our record is neceesarily indicative of good coaching or not. Bad coaches win Stanley Cups sometimes too. Bob Hartley (joke coach) has a cup and even a Jack Adams just a few years ago. Carlyle won a cup with Selanne, Niedermayer and Pronger. Bylsma won a cup with Crosby and Malkin.

I'm not saying Hynes is bad enough to cause a really good team to be bad or to miss the playoffs, but I also don't think he's good enough to make any team play better than what they really are.

Like I said if hynes wasn’t so ugly I would be convinced he’s screwed all these refs wives or girlfriends. Why the hell do we get screwed by the zebras every single night ?

In the first 20 games, I would have given him the benefit of the doubt, but I think with game 21 for him coming up tomorrow night, we're reaching the point where the grace period starts to either end or get very narrow.

I don’t think it works like that. There is no aribitray number of games when a player should be back in the groove and when they won’t.

Sometimes it takes one game. Sometimes it takes all season. Everyone reacts to being injured differently. Everyone reacts from missing a lot of playing time differently. Even more so depending on age or what the injury was. Never mind that the team Travis played on last year is totally different from the one he came back to this year.

so why do they have headsets on?
Actually, you're right. Toronto does review this. Coach's Challenge: BUF @ NJD - 12:21 of the Third Period

After reviewing all available replays and consulting with the Linesman, NHL Hockey Operations staff determined that Hall was off-side prior to the goal. According to Rule 78.7, "The standard for overturning the call in the event of a 'GOAL' call on the ice is that the Toronto Video Room, after reviewing any and all available replays and consulting with the Linesman, determines that one or more Players on the attacking team preceded the puck into the attacking zone prior to the goal being scored and that, as a result, the play should have been stopped for an "Off-side" infraction; where this standard is met, the goal will be disallowed."

You took a player who was used to playing a controlled, simple system and now have him playing a style which essentially amounts to controlled chaos with speed. When the Devils used to start playing run and gun hockey, it used to be a bad thing, now it's a good thing. Opponents have a lot more time and open space than the Devils ever used to allow.

We're not going to see the same Zajac in this system. It's going to take him a while to adapt to the change in style, and he might not ever do it at his age. I still believe in his defensive reads and play though. It's why he's still so strong on the PK. In defensive shutdown situations, Zajac is the guy.
