Wyatt Johnston, emerging young… playoff choker?

Johnston to Leafs confirmed (his father Mike already played for the team and his uncle Chris covers the team too).

How many 21 yo's can actually be relied on in the Playoffs? It's usually guys who have been through adversity for a few years. Bigger issue for the stars is guys like Duchene and Robertson. Also, Harley being portrayed as some stud #1D was always funny to me, Bouchard is much better.

Tough playoff for Johnston, but as a neutral observer I thought he looked fairly dangerous offensively for good stretches of the Edmonton series. Seemed to have some bad luck on some nice chances. Probably not cut out to PK at this point in his career (at least, not deep in the playoffs), and was consistently on the ice for some tough matchups at the centre position.

He's not the fastest skater and seemed to get in trouble when he needed to back-check against an Edmonton rush. Personally I think he'd be a better winger than a centre, as the wing position seems to fit his skillset more.

DeBoer wasn't able to find the right line combinations in the Edmonton series, got outcoached, and the Dallas team as a whole got buried.

Johnston just turned 22, and he's a good one. Dallas needs a new coach, and some turnover of their veteran forwards (Benn, Seguin, Duchene...).

He was fine defensively last year in the playoffs. I was looking at the on ice stats and last year all of Seguin, Benn, Duchene, and Johnston were net positives easily.

This is what happens sometimes when you make major trades. It throws off the chemistry of the team, some players end up playing worse. Also, Johnston and Duchene got insanely unlucky. Looking at the xGF stats. Also, if you watched Duchene and Seguin were generating chances like crazy in many games but couldnt buy goals.

I don't think the players are overrated just unlucky and I think their production would be much better without the Rantanen trade that ruined everything.

He's the Stars top defensive center usually along with Hintz..one of the most trusted guys by DeBoer for the past few years. This was a one-off imo and not representative of his overall play in his career at all. He's definitely meant to be a center

Dallas PK was very good throughout the regular season and most of the playoffs (best or 2nd best this season I believe). Just fell off against EDM and a few times against the Jets

I mean Cody Ceci was on their top pairing and Alex Petrovic was in their lineup. How do you expect Johnston to overcome that as the competition got better and better?
