WTF with Buffalo?

First they were destroyed by the Flyers with 1/4 of the roster filled by career AHLers. And then they destroyed Washington, who are one of the best NHL teams this season, in a back-to-back game.

As the optimist sabres fan a week ago I was looking forward to Hagens in a sabres uniform, as the realist sabres fan Welcome to Buffalo O'Brien!

Its extremely frustrating. Winning once Buffalo is out of the playoffs is a common theme.

Talent is not the issue in Buffalo, culture is, its a losing culture.

Lose 7-4 then win 8-5? All that tells me is over those two games they’re playing wide open games.

It's not just scores. Philadelphia is one of the worst NHL teams on paper (and on the ice), and Washington leads East, is the second best team of the league overall and already has more than 100 points.

This certain variance is a little bit too much, isn't it, though?
Why would you assume that? Do you have a large data set of game results that indicates that it is extremely uncommon for bad teams to have a lopsided win against a good team and a lopsided loss against a bad team?

This is professional sports. Even the very best have bad days, and the very worst have good days.

Nobody goes "oh crap! My jerb's at stake!" like the Buffalo Sabres in late March/April every year. Submarining the team's draft pick is just a bonus.

The Caps have gone cold and their PP finds itself in a coma too, but a lot is on the Sabres for their annual resurgence once the games stop mattering. There's a reason people keep predicting they'll make the playoffs every fall, and it's recency bias. They end the season strong.

The Caps have also pretty blatantly starting going all in on the record now that they've locked and have so few games remaining. Not saying that they're not trying to win, but where the focus on Ovi's goals was maybe 70-30 in favor of just playing, it's now closer to 50-50. If not 40-60.

Can see it with some of the forced passes and forced shots.

Last 5 games: Mcleod has 9 points and Quinn 8 points. If next year Quinn can finaly break out and get 30+ goals and Mcleod continue on his trajectory of being a really good 55/60 points 2c i think they might make the playoff.
It's the same thing with Quinn every year. He'll be injured or suck in october.

It's that time of the year and further supports why I don't put a ton of stock into "schedule strength" especially down the final stretch

As a Sens fan, this is nothing new. We watched one too many of these types of games in the past. As soon as the calendar switched, Sens would play like a world-beater when the games were no longer meaningful and the playoffs were out of reach.
