I guess that report is true, and Dubas wants to tear it down with only Crosby left.

Figure they get a first round pick and roster player (for cap) when they send Malkin to his destination of choice.
Pettersson should get a first at the deadline.
Letang is worth his contract, but they'll have no trade leverage given his NMC, term, and limited number of potential fits.
Moving Karlsson would probably require three-team gymnastics and net a paltry return.
Rust should be moved this summer when his trade protection expires. No idea what he'll fetch.
Nobody will pay for Rakkel or Graves.
Jarry will be bought out.

Malkin has an NMC and wants to retire with Pittsburgh.

He’s not going anywhere.

Man the moment Dubas comes into question its like all reason goes flying out the window. How are people losing their minds over a 35 year old 30 point center getting a 3rd and 5th? You think if anyone else was here Eller returns a 1st?

Dubas doing a bad job with the Penguins has made it easier, but how annoying Leafs fans are about him makes me wish even more that the Penguins had just not hired him in the first place

This feels like if Hurricanes fans would come into every JR trade thread saying "LOL JR SUCKS, GOOD LUCK WITH HIM PENGUINS FANS" if JR's moves wouldn't have worked out. It's just annoying to read.

Should be obvious now that Dubas is tanking. Pens need the next wave of top young talent.
True. Problem is you're very unlikely to get that with a bunch of 3rd and 5th round picks he's accumulating. The lack of 1st round pick returns is killing it.

*note - not saying Eller should return a 1st. Just a general statement about lack of 1sts in any trades he's been making.

Issue is outside of Guentzel, they really don't have any trade chips that can even realistically bring back 1sts.

I made this post last night, but the rebuilding moves Dubas has made since the Guentzel trade has made me a lot more confused about the initial Guentzel trade. Like I totally understand targeting future draft picks to build up the pool, which is what they did with the Eller, Smith and the Hayes pick swap (2025 2nd for 2026 2nd and 2025 3rd IIRC). But why are you also targeting near NHL ready prospects with Guentzel as a trade chip if you're also targeting picks way down the line with everyone else?

I don't think the Guentzel deal was necessarily "bad", but I think trading Guentzel for say Koivunen, a 2025 1st and a 2026 2nd was definitely doable and would have aligned a lot better with the other rebuilding moves they have made.

Caps should trade him back to Montreal at the deadline, so he can do a more complete farewell tour.

Although, maybe there's more time. He still seems to be playing pretty well. Might be another year or two in the tank. Might even have time to get traded back to St.Louis.

It’s a good return but we’re looking at 7-8 years, if the pick ever makes it. So Dubas loses an asset for an asset he’ll likely never get to use. It does nothing for the Penguins current situation except for giving them a little cap space. If they’d held onto him until the deadline, good bet they’d have ended up with a 3rd in the 25 draft.

Maybe he has something else he’s working on, where he needs that cap space. Like trading a certain dman with retention.

They also risk his play falling off or him getting hurt, which would mean they don't get that.

I'd take the guaranteed 2027 3rd and 2025 5th now over gambling on holding onto Eller for longer in hopes of getting a earlier pick (either earlier round or earlier year) but with the risk of him getting hurt or declining.

How did the caps get the hawks 5th anyway?
The Leafs got it Feb 27 2023 as part of the Jake McCabe deal.

Then the Leafs dealt it to Washington at the deadline last year along with the Islanders 3rd in 2024 (which the Caps traded to Vegas in the Logan Thompson deal) for Joel Edmundson.

They traded a 35 year old bottom six player for a 3rd and 5th. You don't have to be this much of a hater. Your point is absolutely nonsensical.

I find laughing at blind praiser of Dubas funny.

But I dont get calling this low value. He went for a 2nd 2 years ago, players in mid 30s don't retain value.

I could always see Florida Panthers If they wanted a C. Only team realistically I could see.
For some reason I could see Malkin and Letang on the Wild, with Fleury this year. Guerin seems like the GM capable of getting them to waive their NTCs. Cap wise that is virtually impossible without significant retention.
