Wasn't this guy on waivers? Seems like a great deal for Minnesota.

I am more familiar with the 5th round pick.

Former 7th rounder. Made some good strides in his last year in the CHL and then his first year in the AHL, but kind of stalled out after that.

6'5" and can skate pretty well but couldn't really play the way that Bruce envisioned his 4th center playing.

Perhaps Grubauer going there wasn't exactly a lock, then? Maybe he will now, but seems they were concerned they'd lose Eller.

This is a solid point. Not the part where Vegas would take Eller over Grubauer or Schmidt, they wouldn't. But the fact that the Caps didn't necessarily have to do this because it likely wouldn't have mattered at all if Eller was exposed. Maybe they're trying to move Grubauer but even then I doubt they'd move Schmidt too. I don't really see a scenario where 1 of those guys are on the team and Eller would have gotten taken.

The Connolly post is also of note. They can't be all that close to a deal with him because they probably would have caved on an extra 100k or so if that were an option instead of giving up a 5th. Maybe Connolly and his agent were trying to cash in on the Caps needing to extend him and the Caps said screw it we don't need you for that and just did this instead.

Connolly also has arbitration rights.

I wouldn't have thought they'd want Eller either, feel the same way with the Ducks and Cogliano, but then Lebrun said something on the radio today about Vegas coveting guys with one year left, so they can ship them out either now or at the deadline. So maybe they do.

Either way, I just thought it was interesting because everyone assumed Grubauer was their pick and that was pretty much settled. If that was the case, who cares if Eller is exposed? This suggests it isn't any kind of done deal and maybe they're trying to nudge them in a certain way, whether thats moving Grubauer and onto Schmidt or back to Grubauer or something.

I was honestly trying to have a more witty remark on the player's obscurity instead of "Dominoes! The cup is ours!"

But I salute your genuine attempt to be helpful. Thank you!

What's interesting is that they didn't sign Connolly instead, as he fulfills the 40/70 requirements, too. Signing Connolly instead of trading for Graovac would have opened the possibility of protecting Ovi/Backstrom/Johansson/Eller/Wilson/Kuz/Bura as well. Maybe Capitals won't re-sign Connolly?

Maybe they didn't want Connolly to have the leverage of knowing they needed another forward signed. Could keep his price tag down when they actually sign him. Or maybe they feel he is less appealing to VGK without a contract? Either way I agree with whoever said this probably means Grubauer is being traded, or else they would have just exposed Eller.

If they trade grubauer, don't they have to expose holtby?
