They definitely don’t want to let Vrana go, their prospect scoring depth isn’t that great, and the team is going down hill slowly but surely unless they luck out with some trades or low draft picks. They’ll need to retool eventually.Washington would have easily matched that in my opinion. If the compensation was a 1st round pick I am sure they would've just let Vrana go (since he wouldn't be able to be within the Caps' cap)
It would be better to keep a home grown 50-60 point guy than to overpay for a 60-70 point guy imo, when the team is at this stage in their cycle. A team should sign/trade for muscle when they’re entering their window, rather than leaving it.
Vrana is young and a safe bet to be a top 6 scoring guy, middle six at worst, they could still trade him later if need be.
