Confirmed Trade: [WSH/BUF] Alex Tuch (signs 8 years, $10.5M AAV) for David Kampf, 2027 3rd round pick

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
He wasn't going to reach free agency though?

You have Kelly McCrimmon literally saying
“That 8th year really impacts our ability to take the player onto our team with a reduced cap”

Computer boy and Sundin echoed the same sentiment with Toronto and their sign and trade to lower the cap

That is nHL front offices saying why they did the sign and trade for the 8th year is for reduced AAV

I guess Ovechkin will not be back. Kyrou, Tuch. And they have a cast of very big forwards with Strome, Wilson, Dubois, and the Protas Bros.

As for the contract: way too long

Fortunately its the caps fans thinking this makes them a contender that are lacking comprehension.
Non caps fan thinking they’ve made themselves better last 24 hours and have top notch goaltending. Maybe they aren’t a top contender, but they’ve made their team better and there is still a lot of time from now until next February to add

The Caps spend some of the most money on Analytics in the league. They bought CapFriendly for the staff.

It is most definitely not a Hail Mary regardless of whether it works out.
Why can't both be true?

Analytics can suggest its a great move for 2-3 years with diminishing returns past that time. But what player like Tuch can you acquire for a 3rd rounder, and/or on FA?

I mean look at their cap situation. 2030-31 is looking like the great exodus. If they don't do much with that group, it's rebuild time like it or not, because none of those contracts are going to look good in 4 years

So in short, the Caps might not be looking past that 3-4 years mark anyway because they see the wall coming.

I see a number of concerns (admittedly, fair ones) about the term, but I don't think Washington has any delusions about what their team will look like in, say, 4 years. They're probably one of the few teams that can justify such long-term risk on short-term goals.

Sounds about right. Washington will love this for the first 4 years. Last 3-4 years will suck but that’s the price to pay to get a good player for free pretty much

And if this league has taught us anything, there will be a way out of it with a draft pick and move to another team looking to get to the floor.

Having 5 legit cracks at the Cup is actually a very good spot to be in.
