Trotz was pretty candid. But really he hammered Novak who is a pretty good player. He may not be a top 6 forward but watching him last night he has good skill and instincts. And at his age and opportunity, he can be a good 3rd line center. Bunting is a good LW and has solid play. But younger, cheaper and getting a center trumps the return. Schenn brings some bang and if he brings that to the Jets what do they care about picks in trying to win this year.

Why didn’t Tortz just make this deal?
Trotz probably had some old school mindblock about trading Schenn within the division (which is hilarious given where the Preds are - and are likely to remain for several years - in the standings) and that he just respects Schenn so much on a personal level that he wouldn't have wanted to consign him to the frozen wastelands of Winnipeg.

That said, I doubt Winnipeg was the only team willing to give up a 2nd for Schenn, so..... :dunno:

Trotz just wanted to get rid of Novak THAT badly, I guess. Which is just his own complete inutility at player evaluation. He is making that ever more clear as time goes on in Nashville. He simply has no clue. He even said it himself in the interview, how if he likes a guy, he likes a guy forever, and if he doesn't... he'll do whatever it takes to get rid of the guy. Yeah, so he didn't like Fabbro, Tomasino, Carrier, Parssinen or Novak. For Novak, he was even willing to forego a 2nd round pick by including Schenn, just so he could get rid of Novak. Which is dumb, because Novak is actually a pretty decent player. (So are Fabbro and Carrier for example).

The guy just has a coach's mentality, which is completely dysfunctional in a GM role.

Schenn apparently requested a trade as soon as he was traded to Pittsburgh.

Didn't he say he had to throw him in to get rid of Novak? Did he WANT to get rid of Novak and did he have questionable value?

The only thing I can rationalize there is - "If I get the early 4th instead of the late 3rd, I'm not moving back that many picks AND I get to move Novak for a player I want"
From what I can tell, yes, he wanted to dump Novak and valued Bunting that highly. So if the Penguins had offered Bunting + PIT 4th, the Predators would've traded Novak + WPG 2nd + WPG 4th and considered that a win.

I don't understand how Barry Trotz couldn't have gotten the picks out of Schenn by trading him directly. Why did they need Bunting?

they must really like bunting, chevy thought he was about to make a deal for schenn before they traded him to the pens

I think (purely me speculating), Trotz thinks he can do a retool instead of a rebuild, and that Bunting would better to serve to shake up this team while keeping it competitive than some picks, at this time
