I was also one of those who was glad Pionk was traded, because he was awful in New York, but there were legit reasons for that. He played in a role above his head in a bad defensive system with a D partner that was trash. He has really lifted his game in Winnipeg.
If NYR could, they would probably want Pionk back instead of Trouba's contract, which he isn't earning. But, I think Winnipeg's game just fits Pionk game better, so who knows? The NYR blueline looks really promising this season anyway.
It's nice to see that Pionk could energize his career after the trade, that's the kind of trades you want to see. Trouba hasn't made a fool of himself either, but he's not a $8m D-man in my eyes.
