With full understanding the Jets should do this, Schmidt is gonna be a sneaky signing for someone. In the right situation, he can be a nice role player still. Just wasn’t gonna be in Winnipeg.

He played well this year, it’s just a shame he’s overpaid by $2 million. Best locker room guy you’ll find, and a genuinely awesome human from what we’ve seen. All the best Schmidty.
If he was overpaid by $2 mill and his cap hit is like $5.9 mill, then logically, the Jets should have been able to trade him with roughly 33%-45% retention to bring his cap charge down to $$3.3 to 4$ mill. As per capfriendly, they are eating $2.7 mill and then $1.7 mill in dead cap charges for him. And they have 3 full retention spots open. Schmidt only had a list of 10 No Trade list. Doing that would keep them at the same dead cap charge for this season and none the following season. Or they up it to the full 1/2 and eat $300K more in dead cap this season and save the $1.4 mill the following.

Have not followed him for a while. Would a $3 mill cap charge and $2.4 mill real money really be more than what he'd get on the open market?

Good human being, but isn't a top 4 guy anymore. Decent bottom pairing guy if he signs cheap

Did he play on the right side at all this year? Back when he played for the Caps I think he played the right side occasionally.

Almost exclusively

Samberg - Schmidt was one of the top pairings for xGF% in the NHL (as a sheltered 3rd pair) for much of the season before Schmidt's play dropped off towards the end of the year

Thank god, guy was absolutely lost out there. Good guy but no longer an asset, addition by subtraction
