Never mind his skill, the statistics, the actual achievement he has had. He grew up in an American hockey system that doesn't have a clue about NHL playoff hockey, or, if that is wrong. the guy has zero passion and intensity, and wilts under pressure. Stop citing what he CAN do during the season. IT DOES NOT MATTER. He is not a leader, should not be captain, barely talks to anyone on the bench, is even more robotic than Tavares, he is reticent, distant. Just trade him to the Kings for Byfield and a draft choice.

We have to get rid of Matthews and Marner both, use the money to bring in 3-4 top forwards. That is the strategy. Bring in the right guys who make 7-8 million a year, but they all have to be forwards. This team needs real 3rd line depth to balance the pressure on the top two lines.

All options should be on the table. I mean every single one of them

A lot of American teams would love an all American boy. Especially someone who can sell Jersies and be marketable

I can definitely see him ending up in LA, NY Rangers, Vegas (who just got embarrased)

You can still get a good haul
I like the Rangers idea. Some nasty motherf***ers on that team who can possibly change our culture a little bit (Krieder, Miller). Rangers must be open for business too.

There’s no hockey system that can compensate for this version of Auston Matthews to get you to a championship. Dragging him to the second round and protecting him by giving him props for being a defensive passenger has already been a Herculean effort. We would need Pacioretty to go full Rantanen to get us past Florida.
I wouldn't disagree with Matthews, but this Berube style of "playoff" hockey sure doesn't look too good when compared to the Panthers' style of playoff hockey, where they seem to dictate much more of the play and flow of the game.

Try to imagine Auston Matthews centering any Florida line playing the way he is now and does the intensity and physical commitment and playing with speed and simplicity as part of a five man unit meet standards? I’d say probably not.

A more healthy Matthews and Willy will help rack up the regular season wins with the skill. Still need to make the playoffs. But the grease they need using the Marner and Tavares budget hopeful makes a playoff difference.

Likely a very unpopular opinion, but, I've never been a big fan of Matthews and I think Marner is the more talented player.

So if it were up to me, believing a culture change was required, I'd re-sign Marner and ask Matthews if he'd be willing to waive his NMC and try and get whatever ransom you can get for him.

So yes, I would want the Leafs to look to trade him.

If this thread is how the GMs of the NHL think, how many 1st are we giving up with him to get rid of the contract?

We don't have a lot of assets to get rid of the contract.

Why would LA trade for a loser?

Some of you make no sense at all.
Matthews is so terrible the Leafs can get soooooooo much....

This is absolute bollocks. He has never had any pride, except when modelling his latest man purse.

People on here used to get mad at me when I criticized him because he would score a meaningless goal that had 0 impact on the game. As if that made up for his floating the rest of the time. :shakehead

It would be a bad time to trade him because his value has lowered and you'd get less for him than if he were traded when he was playing well, If they don't win this series and it is still possible then I think that it's not Mathews that gets traded, it's Marner.

Marner has already refused to waive his NMC and is a free agent on July 1st.

Tre hasn't been around that long.
Fair. However he continued to roll with them despite 10 years of evidence suggesting a change might be needed. An NHL GM should be able to figure out what he has fairly quickly.

That said, it kinda feels like the Core 4 deal with Shanahan directly and the GMs’ jobs have just been to fill out the rest of the roster.

I mean this obviously depends on the return.

He is clearly injured, but then again, he has proven to be injury prone.

I would not rush to trade him, but for the first time I think I would be open to it.

You can’t trade your entire core in one year.
Start with 16 and 91. Approach 44 for a trade.

See what happens next season and then you can look at completely blowing it up with 34 and 88. It will be good because next year it is all on 34’s shoulders. No one else will get more blame than him.

Also that would lead into potentially stealing 97 from Edmonton so you want to have that option available with 34 being here.

Man I wish we had dealt Matthews in 2023 for Wyatt Johnston + Stankoven

I really wanted to retool/rebuild then but it was too early according to most here

We had chances to break up the core 5 in 2020, 2021 and 2023 and passed each time

We will recoup 0 assets for 16, 0 for 91 and now have 88 and 34 left who wont be good enough to build a winner around by just adding UFAs.

Team looks f***ed. Maybe a playoff team for another 2 years but like a R1 and done then Matthews will walk for no assets again in 3 years leaving us with a 32 year old Nylander who wont bring back much to Kickstart our next lengthy rebuild.

The leafs management/ownership and core guys played the last 9 years as poorly as you possibly could.

Credit to Lou, Dubas, Treliving for all f***ing this up and credit to the core 5 for being all time chokers

Yeah how’s that working out for Shanna lol

A sane president who knew what he was doing would make the marner trade after the Montreal choke job in 2021…but nooooo, square peg must fit in round hole, then realized in year 9 that the square peg doesn’t fit in the round hole and now instead of trading marner for assets you let him walk for free…well done Shanna, any other tricks up your sleeve. What a brain dead pessident

For Shanahan it’s worked out great. He’s been in a high paying job for over a decade in which results don’t seem to matter much.
I agree, I think that is about to end, but he has more money to last 5 lifetimes so it doesn’t matter, he con artist an extra $60 million from mlse
