If they're bringing Bouchard and Hyman - which makes some sense, I think certainly for Hyman but debatable for Bouchard - then they should bring RNH too, instead of Thomas or Barzal. The 5v5 drop off isn't huge, especially for Canada's 4C, and you get a massive advantage of keeping most of the Oilers incredible PP together. Crosby seems like he would be the best at covering Draisaitl's role? It's a unique PP setup and people don't realize how pivotal Hyman and RNH are to making it work. We've seen before that just throwing 5 great PP players together in a short tournament sometimes just leads to frustration, the familiarity is a big plus.

That’s an interesting point as well, and probably another point in favour of Hyman making the team. I’m still not sold on Bouchard on the team though, or that his familiarity on the PP would be worth putting him over Makar on the first unit. He basically took Barrie’s role no problem. I imagine Makar could do the same

That's a good point, Bouchard's role is the closest to a generic PPQB role. Makar could do it just as well, that way you don't need Bouchard and his defensive warts on the team.

---------- Hyman
McDavid - RNH - Crosby
---------- Makar

There are too many guys that have the extra incentive to take. I’m taking RNH, Hyman, and Couturier for instance all above him, without so much as a second thought, because they bring the same offense while also being a trio you could deploy as a hard usage shutdown 4th line/top PKers and easily slide up the lineup.

Matches the eye test, he's pretty useless at ES.

Stamkos is still a pretty elite Powerplay finisher though. He's a guy who i very much would expect to get a significant look on a Top-PP Unit, or at worst, the 2nd Unit.

He's also got that built in familiarity with Point, who is an absolute lock. Which helps his case. Plus a decent amount of Hockey Canada experience or "loyalty" factor.

Building a line and 2nd PP Unit around Stamkos+Point wouldn't surprise me at all. Also wouldn't be shocked to see Stamkos left off over lesser "names" for the very reasons illustrated there. But i think there are still other guys ahead of Verhaeghe in line for spots even if Stamkos doesn't make the cut.

Stamkos and Point really do not have much chemistry nor do they interact much on the PP, everything runs through Kucherov. CV is a much better option.

I don't know that i'd call it "chemistry". But there's undeniable familiarity, and in a short tournament, any little shortcuts like that can be valued.

As far as "chemistry" on the Powerplay...well, Stamkos is pretty easy to plug into a very standard PP setup. He's just mostly going to loiter around his shooty spot and draw some lane coverage by doing so. No more, no less really.

You obviously still need someone to run the show on whatever unit you cobble together with those two. But that's pretty much a given anyway. Whether you're substituting for Kucherov, or just looking for a guy to run the PP in general, it doesn't really change who you're gonna plug in there.

It's team Canada they will have plenty of players that can be great on the power play they would want someone who is good at more than just power play
