Would any of you undo the Romanov trade ?

I mean Hutson, matheson and guhle are better than Romanov. So he'd just be another LD playing on the right.

If anything I'd undo the dach trade and use the 13th. But seeing how they took mesar I don't think we'd have gotten anyone good. And if we effect the draft order at all in the first maybe we don't get Hutson at 62 again.

So probably the only move I undo is newhook.

Well yeah, now. But back then seemed a reasonable thong to do. And Dach had a good first year, except for injury. We were excited about last year because of his 1styear with us. He showed he can play, looked promising , then boom. Now here we are.

With what we now know, yes, we could really use Romanov right now instead of Dach on constant IR. But it was a good gamble to make and early on Dach looked like a difference maker until he got his knees blown apart.

Mesar isn't looking good. But Hage, Beck, and of course Hutson are. I'm not ready to conclude they don't know how to draft out of the top 10 in in the first round based on Mesar - especially when you look also at those 2nd and 3rd round picks (Fowler, Engstrom).

I just wish we had gotten another 2nd and drafted Cole Hutson. Howard over Mesar would have been nice. But you can't have everything.

Romanov is an objectively better hockey player than Kirby Dach and he’s a tough clean player too so our dependence on Xhekaj for toughness would be somewhat relieved.

I appreciate the intention but CHI fans immediately shrugging their shoulders at the trade of a 20 year old 3rd overall pick told me everything I needed to know about Dach’s reputation with CHI. They’re not like fans here who insist that young players shouldn’t be criticised until they’re retired.

Are you new here? Some of the criticism is overboard. They get instantly criticized just after they get drafted like Reinbacher.

As much as I like Hutson and Guhle, I hate watching our Dsquad aside of these two.

Carrier has helped us a lot but he is limited in his physicality and skills. I'm not a fan of Struble either, every time he touch the puck its a 10 rounds fight. Savard is nice on the PK but slow as f*** and play older than his age. He looks 38 out there.

Matheson is a world class athlete. Top notch skater, thats it. If he wasn't an extraordinary athlete, he wouldn't play in the top hockey league.

Its just food for thoughts. I liked the way Romanov played the game. Any of you miss that player ?

Considering we have too many left D, I still make the deal. Just not the Dach trade. The 13th pick in draft and first pick in third round should brought us better options.

Proves my point actually, fans typically overhype their prospects — Hawks fans were celebrating getting such a high pick for Dach. He was BRUTAL in his last year with CHI, just like he was brutal this season. Disengaged and terrible.

It was a calculated risk, which I think I would have made in that same context. So far, it hasn't worked out but Dach still has a year to prove himself, which, if all goes right could still happen.

It will be interesting to see if Dach is used as a trade chip, but I doubt he holds a lot of value these days. Young-ish, big centres aren't easy to find, though, so you never know...

I don't miss Romanov at all despite him being a solid player for the isles.

Romanov is an average sized defensive top 4 D and Dach is a 6'4 fwd with power and skill to his game, which is very hard to find.

At the very worst Dach ends up a middle 6 fwd with size and skill, but I don't 100% write him off as a top 6 player yet.

He has definitely had some bad luck. I keep remembering how he was rounding out before his bad injury.

In Dach's case, the injury history was already there. So yes, you could have predicted that was a possibility.

He had a wrist injury that Chicago badly mismanaged and there was bad blood on both sides. That’s why he was available.

The Canadiens did their due diligence on the wrist and determined that it wasn’t a concern. They turned out to be right on this.

The leg injury was a fluke. Could’ve happened to any player. You can’t predict that.

You my be right but they shouldn't sell low. They have no choice but to rehab him and play him and hope he can bounce back a bit and revisit next summer.

Chicago also discarded Strome, DeBrincat, etc so there's a pattern.

No, it was worth the risk. Romanov is a solid #4 LD but we don't really need that at the moment.

I was disappointed we traded away Romanov, he was our top young dman and was trending to keep improving (as he has).

But you have to give to get and Dach was a very worthwhile gamble. The knee injuries suck but injuries are always a risk. Would re-do the trade without hesitation unless I had a crystal ball.

I'm gonna say no to the original question also. It is too easy to use hindsight. If not for the injuries, Dach was gonna be good for Habs. Now it seems more unsure than ever, but it could have gone a very different way. He did have a history of injuries, but sometimes those get resolved over time.

Gamble doesn't seem to be paying off at the moment, it doesn't mean Hughes should never gamble again.

With the benefit of hindsight, Dach wasn't the right player to target, but trading one of our many young Dmen to find that elusive center was the proper approach IMO. We lost that gamble, but it was worth trying, in short.

Even without considering Mesar, looking at the middle of that round there's nothing substantial prospect wise. Lots of overhyped prospects that aren't meeting expectations though. The fact that they even did the Dach trade kind of suggests they didn't like what was available at 13.

Most of the board wanted Kulich and they clearly had Mesar above him so I wouldn't expect they would have grabbed whoever had the best post-draft years at 13, like Snuggerud went 10 picks later. McGroarty went 14th but if they really liked him I am not sure they even trade for Dach. It wasn't dropping Romanov specifically for Dach, it was capitalizing on Romanov's value for a perceived logjam at LD and getting the best asset in return. They thought it was Dach. Which means they weren't very bullish on the potential of the guys ranked in the middle of the first round. Mesar was a bit of a reach too and they thought he and Hutson had huge warts but good potential. Beck was the "safe" pick.

Anyways I doubt we end up with Hutson if we'd had an extra first. Maybe they take Nazar at 13th then and don't grab Mesar later, changing the entire order of the end of the first/second rounds. Maybe someone else had Hutson second on their list but gets moved to first before 62. Or maybe getting the extra forward at 13 means they grab Beck earlier and then reach on Luneau or Casey at 31; leaving them not to gamble on Hutson.
