Worst regular season players to win the Conn Smythe

Actual worst player in terms of raw talent is one of Marchessault, Bennett or Williams

All 3 were bad selections with Williams being the worst

At least with Marchessault and Bennett you could argue they were still amongst the top 3 in terms of impact, even if there were obvious better choices (Eichel and Pietrangelo for Vegas, Barkov and Reinhart for Florida)

Williams flat out was not more impactful than Doughty, Kopitar or Gaborik and “Mr. Game 7” was an overblown narrative which conveniently ignored the Kings wouldn’t have needed so many Game 7s if he didn’t pull multiple disappearing acts

All love for Marchessault during his time here and he was still great in our win but as time passes it's just going to become more and more obvious that Eichel was the true MVP in 2023

Bennett has never been anything special during the regular season and was a poor choice for the Smythe last year, should 100% have gone to Forsling. Williams barely scored at a half point per game pace in 13-14 regular season then ramped up in the playoffs. He also shouldn't have won though, Doughty was unbelievable in the 2014 run.

Bouchard just finished 4th in Norris voting, defensive play is a secondary consideration for defencemen now so Forsling was never to win with only 5 points

Also wouldn't put him ahead of Barkov who was crazy good defensively while scoring a ton more

More deserving than McDavid's pity participation trophy tbh. There's more to team victory than scoring on the power play.

Panthers fans still crying about McDavid's CS after winning 2 Cups against him, might be the strangest hatred from a fanbase towards a player in the NHL lol

I remember making a poll on whether Bennett was the correct choice for the smythe. Needless to say he was the unanimous winner.

The other Florida player who got votes was actually Marchand and that reflected in the real Conn Smythe voting record

Reinhart, Bobrovsky or Barkov werent in the conversation. But I do think they'd be good candidates too. But I think it hurts that both Bobrovsky and Barkov weren't nearly as good in their 2nd SC run. Barkov had incredible defensive stats in the first cup if I recall.

Honestly, I think Bennett had the strongest Conn Smythe performance of the 3 even though he has arguably the weakest career. He was a physical beast, in a way Marchessault and Williams weren't, while having a better goalscoring postseason than either.

Eichel was the clear cut engine of that Vegas team. And either Kopi or Doughty should have won

Seems to me to be a clear "bottom" 7 amongst Smythe winners of Bennett, Marchessault, Williams, Ward, Guiguere, C. Lemeiux, and Ranford

Of those I'd probably from best to worst in terms of regular season careers have:
Williams

Lemieux
Marchessault
Bennett
Guiguere

Ward

Ranford

Do you think the Panthers didn’t get awarded a real cup because of that? That would suck!
I think you're confused about the point of this thread. Relax...absolutely nothing you've said contradicts the notion that Bennet is a rather pedestrian regular season performer. Doesn't mean everyone wouldn't want him on their team or that he didnt deserve the CS or Florida didnt win the Cup.

lol

Yes, those 15 goals were very unimpressive lmao. Most road goals ever too. I’d hate as well if I only have seen 2 round wins lmao. One of the best runs we’ve seen.

Don't forget that, according to some, he singlehandedly prevented the Leafs from winning the Cup when he bumped into Stolarz. For a single player to be have that kind of worldly power, isn't that the definition of a Conn Smythe winner?

Williams winning made sense in the moment. Two reasons why, and none of them are about game 7 for me, since both Kopitar and Doughty were also good there:

Round 1 - Kings down 0-3, dead in water, and Williams was GREAT in the comeback. Two goals in game 4 (and, important goals, both times broke a tie), and 6 points overall in those 4 games in the reverse sweep (to be fair, the other 2 players were great too here, but I think Williams stands out a bit more).

Finals - Williams had 7 points in 5 games. The other 2 were limited to 2 assists each.

The finals is always more important than earlier rounds. Maybe if you look at all 26 playoff games that year as equal in importance, either Kopitar or Doughty win. But I thought Williams winning was fine.
Can’t argue with any of this—I bought his jersey after that run after all.

Ranford’s 1990 season wasn’t very good. Nor was Cam Wards 2006

Dryden only played 6 games but he was good in them.
