Worst NHL Player in NHL History

5 cups btw
Also 1,000+ games in the NHL....obviously not one of the worst players. The video is pretty funny though. To be fair, you could probably pull together a video like that of almost any player in the league at is happens to everyone from time to time. That said, the entire video was only covering time with LA where he only played 226 games of his 1,017 game career.

Was never really that great, but certainly good enough to keep around for a long time.

He’s the luckiest player of all time, guy was straight booty cheeks

But no Jack Adams awards right? My comment was about coaching...
Not eligible as he was never a head coach. I think is coaching is similar to when he was playing. Never the greatest player and never good enough to get a head coaching job, but good enough to stick around for a long time....assistant coach in the NHL for almost 25 years.

I don't have an answer, but given that EBUGs and cup of coffee guys are eligible, it's one of them, almost certainly.

A far more interesting question, IMO, is worst NHL player in history to play at least 500 games.

The first name that came to mind for me watching the early 2000's Oilers teams was Toby Petersen, but he fell short of the 500 game mark. I also don't think he was the absolute worst, just a case of a coach having a favorite player and playing him in situations he had no business being in on the ice.

I would also like to know who the worst ECHL player in NHL history is.
probably Wayne Gretzky, dude couldn't even lock down a roster spot in the ECHL

per the actual topic, the worst player I've ever seen is Marc-Andre Cliche (151 career games, 3 goals/11 assists). I remember a JFresh post where his card was just red 0% across the board, which absolutely matches the eye test.

Relative to the amount of opportunity and money given to him, I think David Clarkson has a strong argument of worst all time on a per dollar/per minute with offensive talent basis.

I can’t find the old article but iirc in his two years as a leaf he had 11 assists only one of which was the result of a pass that he made on purpose. 1 PP assist in two years averaging 2 mins a night on the PP. His entire skillset outside of shooting the puck seemed like he was a regular guy that snuck past security to go to the locker room for an autograph and no one on the team noticed that he wasn’t in fact their random AHL call up of the week. 5.75x7 for a guy that can’t skate, can’t pass, can’t stay on his skates, can’t play defense, can’t play the boards is crazy. He owes Elias every penny of that contract for bouncing 30 pucks in off his ass.

The real answer is someone who played <10 games long before I was born.

I will say the worst player I've ever seen play at least half a season in the league was Shane Endicott. There was not a single thing he could do/think at the NHL level aside from being 6'4". At least a goon could fight, Endicott just took lazy hooking penalties because he had goon speed and goon hands. He couldn't pass the puck, he couldn't receive the puck, his shot was woefully weak and hilariously inaccurate, his positioning was lousy, his awareness was non-existent, he wore a puka shell necklace...

You know he was good because he went from playing in the NHL to playing in Japan in little more than a year.

I will always remember him as the guy who scored the last NHL regular season goal Patrick Roy ever gave up.

It gets drowned out in my mind by the Andrew Brunette postseason version, which happened so slowly that it took the Pepsi Center crowd about ten full seconds to realize that it was over. We just kind of stared at each other.

Bill Mikkelson, as mentioned, is a decent choice. But that +/- is also a mark of playing on the worst team in history. He had 22 points in 147 games. Which isn't great, but...

Whenever I think of "bad player" my mind immediately goes to Jeff Shantz. Maybe because the Avs had him at the end of his NHL career. He played a very respectable 642 games, scoring 211 points, so it's not him. But he left an impression.

If we're excluding goons and fill-in players, Todd Simpson was the worst NHL regular that I've ever seen. Devoid of both skill and hockey sense. Terrible skater as well. He was a defensive dman with so-so defensive play and a tendency to have defensive lapses...like a poor man's version of Dana Murzyn.

Sure, Simpson was big and tough in an era when those two attributes were highly valued, but he brought literally nothing else to the table. Absolutely mind boggling that he captained an NHL team and managed to stick on an NHL roster for a decade

The Sejna one sticks out for me because I lived in Colorado Springs while he was at CC and was excited to see his first NHL game, which was that last regular season game of 2002-03.

I'm pretty sure the Brunette goal got drowned out by alcohol.

1 assist in 58 QMJHL games and he somehow made it to the NHL. He's only ever scored 5 goals in his entire playing career and 7 assists. That is awful wow.
Look at his size though....Old boys club love their meat and potatoes? Idk. Only explanation I can come to for why he kept getting chances(even in the ahl).

Pop said Patrick Traverse was an absolute pylon and always use him as a barometer for bad defenseman. Don’t know if anyone can confirm?

In terms of the modern era, and excluding goons and EBUGs, my first 2 thoughts when it comes to the Oilers, who saw a lot of bad players during the decade of darkness, are Alex Plante and Chris Vandevelde.

Plante was a first round pick who put up a whopping 2 points in 36 games in his draft +1 WHL season. He was a horrible skater, and couldn’t handle the puck. He’s a prime example of why I don’t like drafting defensive defensemen. If it wasn’t for his draft position, he likely never would have come close to the NHL. He spent most of his pro career playing in South Korea.

Vandevelde was a mediocre AHL bottom 6er (finished 12th in points amongst forwards on the Oilers AHL team his last year in Edmonton) who got a couple injury call ups in Edmonton, before Philadelphia decided for some unknown reason to play him in the top 9. He wasn’t particularly awful at anything, but he didn’t do anything well. He had a career year and Philadelphia still didn’t extend him, after which he ended up in the Finnish league where he continued to be a bottom 6er. Usually even depth players at the NHL level can light up lower leagues, he couldn’t even play as a second liner in lower leagues.
