Worst NHL Player in NHL History

Joel Rechlicz actually couldn't skate

This thread turns up every 6 months and the answer to the question is always Joel Rechlicz, full stop.

Just fully a beer-league level player who could fight and actual levels worse than the next-worst of that ilk like Boogaard and MacIntyre.

Excellent choice.

He’s the luckiest player of all time, guy was straight booty cheeks

After watching the first minute of that, I realized there can be no other answer.

It's always weird to see Huddy dropped in here by people who watched a video that some guy with a vendetta made near the end of his NHL career. Guy was twice 6th in Norris voting and a far above-average NHL player in his time.

It’s hard to answer this about skaters, because the truly worst ones barely get on the ice before they’re booted back out of the league.

Easier to answer about goalies, because even a short term in the league leaves a statistical mark and often an imprint on the fanbase’s memory.

So with that said, shamelessly myself from several years ago:

I've talked about Laskoski a lot on the HOH board. He was actually the *backup* in his last year in the NCAA. He's the worst starting goalie in NHL history and it isn't close. He was basically an EBUG-level player who due to a bizarre series of events ended up being an NHL team's starting goalie for nearly a full season.

Jay Caufield was really bad, even for an 80's goon.

Caufield is the worst player I've ever seen who spent multiple full seasons in the NHL.

Ya, I saw the Huddy video and thought “ok, but to be out there for that many lowlights.. dude was doing somethin right.” He played 1000 games, it’s like posting this and claiming Risto is the worst. Dude clearly hasn’t mastered object permanence, he ain’t an NHLer.

his hockeydb page is fun to read

It is pretty remarkable.

He had zero goals in NAHL career.

He had zero goals in USHL career.

He had zero goals in QMJHL career.

He had zero goals in UHL career.

He had zero goals in ECHL career.

He had zero goals in NHL career.

He had one goal in his IHL career.

He had four goals in AHL career.

The highest scoring season of his entire career at any level was a two point effort with the Hershey Bears in 2011-12 that he matched again 2013-14.

I feel like I could score more goals and I'm a goalie.

Wrecker was a terrible hockey player, but I'll never forget him slipping past rookie Ghost, fresh out of Union, for a tap-in goal. Video of it exists on YouTube on the highlight package for the 4/19/2014 game between Hershey and Adirondack (it's the first clip in the video), but I'm having trouble linking it here. I think it was the only goal I ever remember seeing him score (I was there!).

There's a lot of guys being named here who were serviceable minor leaguers. I don't think they fit the category of worst anything. Recker doesn't fit that category. I think the answer would have to be someone like that, who had no discernable ability whatsoever besides fighting. When he played for the Bears, 95% of the time, he'd hop on the ice for a few shifts, fight, then maybe get one or two more shifts before being stapled to the bench the rest of the game... not unlike most pure goons.

Kinda looks like he scored an NHL goal here. I guess they gave it to Comeau.

Holy shit that’s amazing but I also feel awful- dude thinks he scored, but that wasn’t even the question asked. You can almost see both their wheels turning, like “does this guy not know?” Worth a watch, everyone.
