Latvia going to OT with Canada. Schaefer got hurt.
Did you see the play where Schaefer got hurt? Or should i say "hurt himself". My goodness.
If I'm a scout picking #1 overall, I start wondering whether this guy has the hockey IQ to be deserving of the top pick. Guys at this level usually have a bit more spatial awareness, anticipation and vision than to run themselves into a goal post at full speed before crashing into the boards. Was a bad look for the supposed top player in the 2025 draft. It wasn't bad luck, or a fluke play caused by an opponent....they guy just skated himself into injury.

Latvia opening the tournament with Canada followed by US seems a bit rough.

Be funny if it was no big deal and they’re undefeated tomorrow.

Nice little Czech scrimmage today. Jiricek taking a shot off the ankle and making a horrible shot decision right off the hop. Stancl looks awesome, this is a Stancl/Stenberg tourney for us

The reason they are raving about Sale's play for his national team is because outside of these games the Kraken fans have pretty much already written off their recent first round pick as a bust, he has been awful

Also the Czechs are going to score 20 goals in this game

not sure which is worse the stream quality of all 20 streams or the Kazakh defense and goaltending

It's too bad the Blues can't keep everyone. Both are LW, and our winger depth will be stacked in 2 years when those guys are potentially ready with Buch, Holloway, and Neighbours on the left side and Kyrou, Snuggerud, and Bolduc on the right not to mention Kaskimaki and Pekarcik vying for positions too.

While good for a fourth rounder, Stancl's stats in the WHL this year as a 19 year old aren't that good when compared to players that became average or better NHLers. However, for whatever reason he has been fantastic in both WJCs he has attended so far. Putting up 4 goals and 2 assists in 7 games last year as an 18 year old was great, not even considering his low draft-position. This year has been more of same. I wonder if he just has that clutch factor that allows him to take it up a notch against higher-competition or in meaningful games. Will be super interesting to see how he does in the AHL. His game does seem like it could translate to pro's rather seemlessly.

He looks the same to me in this tournament as he has been looking for Kelowna. On Kelowna he is playing with Andrew Cristall who has been incredible in the first half for them and is a shocking omission from Team Canada. Cristall is dynamic but Stancl is also doing all the right things to turn Cristall's plays into points. He was a 4th round pick who has clearly leveled up. NHL body, sharp player. This is turning into a fantastic pick

It's not clear at all that Stancl and Stenberg are locked into LW and it's one or the other. Stancl in particular I can see playing center.

Stancl and Stenberg are going to be better than Snuggles, Kaskimaki and Pekarcik IMO. I value Stenberg more than Bolduc.

Walkover opponent but a hat trick for Stancl as I type this

It’s his first year on North American ice and he’s above a point per game. That’s pretty solid, especially for a fourth rounder.

Stenberg might be a better 2 way player, but I don’t think he’ll score as many goals as Bolduc will. Bolduc is going to be a perennial 25g scorer, and I just didn’t see that much offensive upside with Stenberg. Maybe 20g and really good 2 way play.

When a team scores 14 goals against a weak team like Kazakhstan, it will create misleading numbers. In the future, people will be impressed by Stancl's WJC numbers and not realize half of them came in a blowout vs Kazakhstan.

I don't disagree that he's doing good for a 4th rounder at all. I said he was doing good for a 4th rounder in the first sentence. What I said was compared to average NHLers or above his 19 year old WHL season isn't anything to write home about. I think he was a great pick, but that doesn't mean he's having a world-ending season. The point of my post was that his WJC performances have been much more impressive. I'm not knocking his performance in the WHL as a whole. Like I said for a 4th rounder he has actually been playing above average in the league.

I think that's a fair critique but Stancl has also played well against better countries as well. If you remember, he scored two clutch goals against Canada last year, including the game winner with 11 seconds left to make it the semifinals. So while it is important to note this year that 5 of his points so far came in a blowout win vs. Kazakhstan, he has also performed well against the top opponents at the WJC as well.

Not necessarily a critique, just something to consider. I think it's clear he's got solid potential for a guy drafted at his position. Poor Kazakhstan, first this guy and now this.
