i think Mackinnon didn't play after the 3rd russian goal. not really his fault 100% that goal. Murphy is the worse player in the defenessman zone and 5 on 5 in the whole tourney. Heck he wasn't good on the PP either till today. Spott putting Murphy with Reiley on for OT?? WTF is he thinking? Heck just Murphy and Reiley together is Pejorative Slured how did he not learn this from USA game?? Spott is the worse coach ever!

I said it before and I'll say it again, when you have Murphy, Reilly and Wotherspoon you are screwed because eventually you have to play Reilly and that means Reilly with Murphy.

Compare that to the hit from behind and tell me that one violation was worth one game while the other is worth four games. I *never* said Reinhart should've gotten nothing.

Even the ref called the two infractions differently (Reinhart was a two minute minor - probably should've gotten a double minor while the other got five & a game).

Just because the got one "wrong" doesn't mean the other wasn't right. If a Russian or American did the stick swing to head they'd have gotten 4 as well.

I don't see any bias, just each case treated individually. You or I might disagree but the suspensions are defendable, they aren't crazy off the wall stuff.

Corrado wouldn't have made a huge difference there but I'd take him over Murphy on that play 100/100 times.

Murphy went directly at Nichuskin instead of trying to take a better angle and force him wide, he was far too easily out leveraged. Poor defensive read from a poor defensive player. But...why was he out there in the first place?

Murphy was in perfect position to angle Nicushkin away from the net, he didn't even need to pivot, just keep leaning on and pushing while skating forwards.

The pivot was just bailing out and completely unnecessary, Murphy can't defend. PERIOD.

I think the 4 defensman who were on the bench when that play occurred would have broken that play up, as they know how to defend. Nicushkin is a big man, and had a bit of a step, but it wasn't an unstoppable play if defended correctly.

Rielly and Murphy are poor defenders at best.

Murphy was the goat on that play but Rielly sure didn't help matters. Rielly stepped up and missed the puck which started the play, then he had a chance to hit Nichuskin cutting to the middle but just didn't have the balls or conviction with the tournament on the line.

Still not a fan of Rielly in the tournament. Had a few nice moments carrying the puck and his skating and skillevel are impressive but he just doesn't engage defensively, is poor along the boards and in front of the net and his lack of point shot will really hurt his chances of being a high end PP producer at the NHL level IMO. Don't see how the Leafs had this kid ranked as the best player in the draft...

Did MacKinnon impress anyone in this game or tournament? It's tough to excel as a 17 year old going head to head with mostly 18 and 19 year olds but he certainly didn't look like one of the best draft eligible playes out there from what I saw.

I only watched the overtime of the replay of Can-Rus, but what stood out to me was that, just a minute before the GWG, Danault threw himself into Makarov (with no one even close to pushing him in to the goalie), giving Canada an empty net to score on. Disgusting. It reminded me exactly of Boston in 2011. And similar to Boston, there was no penalty. No play whistled dead. Nothing. The refs gave them a free pass to cheat. And again, just like with Boston, the announcers defended Danault afterwards; something like "Look how Danualt tries to stop before he gets to the goalie. He does everything he can, and he just about avoids contact." What ****ing ********. Poisonous words to reframe reality. I was so happy Russia won.

This was my thought as well. Nichushkin - Schroeder - Kassian. The 2 power forwards on Schroeder's wings; the formation he has always done well with. But can Nichuskin play LW?

He was the schmuck that had two offensively minded defensemen as a pairing. I don't blame either D so much as the coach that tried to fit a square peg into a round hole. To repeat the overused statement, Corrado would've been a far better option being the defensive partner for either one of the two.

Team had a lot of question marks going into the tournament.

Coaching - some very questionable roster choices. Mind was made up prior to the selection camp on who the goaltenders were going to be. 2 best performing goalies at the camp were cut and moved to 3rd string. Opting for a PP specialist. Fine, but only if that player lives up to the hype of being a PP specialist and the remaining Dmen can cover up for him defensively, especially if one guy goes down.

Discipline was an issuing. 3 suspensions a bad sign. Can't imagine how Sutter would have dealt with Jenner after his pre-tourney suspension.

Despite the most recent draft being D studded, Canada's D didn't impress.

Forwards, lacked the energy guys from prior years.

Next year is going to be tough. 2012 draft had limited forward talent for Canada and in 2013, expect to see Drouin and McKinnon in the NHL should there actually be a 2013 NHL draft. So, offense for next year will be an issue.

What can be learned from this year?

1) Canada needs to get a better coaching staff. What a fall it has been from Sutter/Hartsburg to Spott
2) Selection process. Do you take players who are playing well now (ie. the goaltenders or do you base it on what they did in the summer evaluation camp?)
3) Discipline. Need to understand the international standard and play within their rules.

Spott and Team Canada should be embarrassed, we have come back with medals for the past 15 years, and the one year we don't win a medal is in a lockout year? embarrassing.

no excuses for a defense though. if you are small than don't be a defenseman... Murphy got walked around like he was a last forward back.

I think Mackinnon was poorly used. Would have liked to see him and Drouin stay together, and maybe play with Huberdue like they did in the Russia series.

In the early stages of the tournament I really liked Galy's game, great hands great vision, and maybe the best shot in the tournament.

Huberdeau, Scheifele and Strome didn't perform up to expectations. Huberdeau especially, quietest 9 points I've ever seen. Strome had flashes but he always kept me wanting more.
