I think Primeau will get a spot on Team Canada.

Fedotenko can't play for Russia, he plays for the Ukraine.

For Russia, I can't see Antropov getting a spot. Alexei Zhamnov has to be on their team.

I can't see Boucher getting a spot. Either Dunham or John Grahme

Zhamnov is one of the most under rated Russians in the NHL. He's a lock for this squad.

Antropov would only play for Kazakhstan most likely. In an iihf event - for sure, in a World Cup event - I don't know, but I think you have to be a citizen.

Goalies (3): Rick DiPietro, Robert Esche, John Grahame

Defensemen (8): Bryan Berard, Chris Chelios, Derian Hatcher, Ken Klee, Brian Leetch, Paul Mara, Brian Rafalski, Mathieu Schneider

Forwards (15): Tony Amonte, Erik Cole, Craig Conroy, Chris Drury, Scott Gomez, Bill Guerin, Brett Hull, Steve Konowalchuk, John LeClair, Mike Modano, Jeremy Roenick, Brian Rolston, Keith Tkachuk, Doug Weight, Mike York

Can you imagine what kinda team would have been put together if Czechoslovakia hadn't split up:

Havlet - Lang - Jagr
Gaborik - Demtra - Hossa
Elias - Prospal - Sykora
Satan - Handzus - Dvorak
Extras Nedved - Hrdina - Zednick

Visnonsky Chara
Hamrlik Kaberle
FKaberle Malik

Hasek
Vokoun
Ceckmank

That offense gives me nightmares just thinking about it.

I will take a stab at team Slovakia:

Palffy-Stumpel-Bondra
Gaborik-Demetra-Hossa
Satan-Handzus-Nagy
Orszagh-Radivojevic-Zednik
Extras: Kolnik, Cibak, Bicek

Visnovsky-Chara
Mezei-Majesky
Sekeras-Suchy
Ex: Kudroc, Richard Stehlik, Obsut

Lasak
Stanta

I would also throw in Marek Svatos. He brings energy to the game. And Ronald Petrovicky, who is a good defensive player Slovakia needs, instead of ineffective Jiri Bicek.

This is true. I didn't know Svatos was a Slovak. He'll still be an extra anyways.

How about defensemen. I don't know much about Slovaks and european leagues, but european leagues, but they're going to need some help.

Sven Butenschön?

Well, he has German parents like Kölzig, has a German passport like Kölzig, was even born in Germany unlike Kölzig but because of the fact that he also has a canadian passport he isn't elegible to play for the German team.

He would be eligible if he had played at least two years in Germany, but he hasn't - so no Butenschön!

German article on the matter!

How about defensemen. I don't know much about Slovaks and european leagues, but european leagues, but they're going to need some help.

Don't know that much either, can just tell of two in Sweden.

Lubomir Sekeras - Signed with Dallas for the playoffs but played most of the season in Sweden. Has seemed a little "tired" and uninspired during the season, but he has skill. He also has a lot of experience, with some seasons in Minnesota for example, but probably won't be on the slovakian roster.

Richard Lintner - One of the best offensive defensemen I have ever seen, always joins the rush, and sometimes looks more like a forward. He though have some problems in his one zone at times, and his temper is a concern. He was suspended for crosschecking a player laying on the ice this season. He hasn't had any luck in the NHL, but often is on the Slovakian National Team, and maybe will be with them in WC as well.

They have six NHL d-men (Chara, Visnovsky, Mezei, Suchy, Strbak, Majesky) some high calibre NHLers but no good depth. Chara though will be a great leader among these players and maybe his precense will lift the others. I have been somewhat impressed with Strbak this season though, will be a good player IMO.

ack, forgot about Strbak too. He's definetaly on the Sloakian team over Mezei and Sekeras. It's hard to find out who is Czech and who is Slovak for newer players because ESPN lists them all as from Czechoslovakia :shakehead

I was never too high on Richard Lintner though. Strbak is a player I like though

Butenschön could play for Germany, the World Cup isn't an official IIHF tournament, it's organized by the NHL.
Hans Zach wouldn't invite him, because he can only play in this one tournament.

I don't recall Butenschon playing in the olympics either...

Have the same problems sometimes too. Radoslav Suchy was long listed as czech, as was Radovan Somik, but they're both slovakian for what I know. Tomas Malec is another concern, but I think he is slovakian too.

If I had to pick a Team Canada as of today (and assuming everyone (ie Bertuzzi, Lemieux) are available). I do not believe in writing the team down in terms of lines. I think that is misleading, as lines should probably be changed up multiple times a tournament (if not each game).

Forwards: Todd Bertuzzi, Shane Doan, Dany Heatley, Jerome Iginla, Paul Kariya, Vincent LeCavalier, Mario Lemieux, John Madden, Patrik Marleau, Glen Murray, Rick Nash, Martin St Louis, Joe Sakic, Alex Tanguay, Joe Thornton

Defence: Adrian Aucoin, Rob Blake, Adam Foote, Ed Jovanovski, Bryan McCabe, Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger, Wade Redden

Goaltenders: Martin Brodeur, Roberto Luongo, Jose Theodore

Team Finland would probably not have many surprises, the top two lines should be pretty much set... The bottom lines made up of the hard workers that impress the most.

Lehtinen - Koivu - Selänne
Ruutu - Jokinen - Kapanen
Laaksonen - Pirjetä - Miettinen
Nieminen - Kapanen - Ruutu
(Rintanen, Hahl)

Numminen - Pitkänen
Niinimaa - Väänänen
Timonen - Salo
(Lydman)

Nurminen/Kiprusoff
Noronen (he's impressed in his debut!)
Lehtonen

Looks good, but I would rate Hahl over both Pirjetä and Kapanen at the moment. And I would also add Esa Pirnes (LA) and Niklas Hagman (Flo) to the mix, but as you said, the bottom lines could be mixed in many ways. Finland have many hard working forwards but not so much topline material, so the top two lines will be as you have made them. There are no other options.

Here´s my swedish team for the World Cup. I selected 3 goalies, 8 d-men and 15 forwards since quite a few of these forwards are more or less injured. I can´t see any reason to have more d-men either with so few games in the tournament. No Sedins for me thank you.

Goalies
Tommy Salo
Mikael Tellqvist
Henrik Lundqvist

Defensemen
Nicklas Lidström
Mattias Norström
Kim Johnsson
Mattias Öhlund
Niclas Hävelid
Marcus Ragnarsson
Daniel Tjärnqvist
Dick Tärnström

Forwards
Mats Sundin
Peter Forsberg
Daniel Alfredsson
Markus Näslund
Henrik Zetterberg
Fredrik Modin
Michael Nylander
Jörgen Jönsson
Samuel PÃ¥hlsson
Per-Johan Axelsson
Mikael Renberg (Will he be able to play at all?)
Tomas Holmström
Jonas Höglund
Kristian Huselius
Andreas Johansson

Reserves:
Johan Hedberg
Kenny Jönsson
Christian Bäckman
Ronnie Sundin
Peter Nordström
Andreas Salomonsson
Johan Davidsson
Niklas Sundström
Nils Ekman

I like your team there. Only objection I have really is Mikael Renberg and Jonas Höglund among forwards. Renberg, while always putting up points with team Sweden, has been very inconsistent in his play IMO and I think there are better players available. But then again, he could very well miss the tournament even if selected.

Höglund I simply don't think is good enough. One thing to have 2 good games in the WC, another thing to team up against the best in the world. Fredrik Modin has an even better shot and Holmström can take on his role on the powerplay stading in front of the net and in the slot.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the Sedin's don't make the team, but damn if they are not even reserves! ;) :)

I don't think these rosters will have to do anything with the results.

Canada will win no matter what happens. Canada's unbeatable at home.

They lost at home in the only world cup prior to this one.

International hockey is as competitive as sports get, eight countries could win it.

When you say 8, you mean 7 right? :D

No of course several teams could win, but Canada and US are always the top 2 teams when playing on North American soil ... why don't they play this World Cup in India or Mongolia? That would be fair

Here's my lineup for Russia (if everyone accepts to play) :

Samsonov - Fedorov - Mogilny
V. Bure - Zhamnov - Kovalev
Ovechkin - Datsyuk - Kovalchuk
Frolov - Yashin - Morozov

Bench : Afinogenov, S. Kozlov, V. Kozlov, P. Bure (maybe he'll play!!!)

Tverdovsky - D. Markov
Gonchar - Kasparaitis
Malakhov - Kalinin

Bench : Zhitnik, Zubov, A. Markov, Yushkevich, B. Mironov

Khabibulin
Nabokov

Bench : Sokolov

What I really like about this team is that it really mixes the old with the young. That's what you need to win. But this team is not strong enough physically to play on smaller North American rinks ... :(
