Why is there a North America team when there's already Canada and USA ? Doesn't that NA team defeat the purpose when it's country vs country or is there not enough teams so they came up with team NA and is there a team Europe as well?

They want as many NHLers as possible. Its an artificial and stupid idea. Altough a bit interesting too since its unique.

North america is also giving the future olympians who at this early stage in there careers would most definately not get this type of environment until later in there careers.

The only 1's on the north american team that might have a chance at the countrys true team is mcdavid and eichel.

And even then would canada take mcdavid? They never took crosby in his rookie season when crosby was even better then mcdavid.

Since there is already a USA team and a Canada team what does that leave?

Team NA is obviously team Mexico!!! Or at least they should use their national anthem for games.

Would you rather have a competitive Young Stars team and Europe or two cupcake teams that you know are going to get creamed?

Give me the extra competitive teams.

When's the last time countries like Slovakia and Switzerland have got "creamed" in best-on-best anyway?

Last I checked, been pretty close games in the Olympics over the past decade or so.

If parity is everything for you, maybe you should stick with the NHL.

7-1 Sochi, US vs. Slovakia.

To NYR89's point though, you realize that your mindset is all predicated that these teams, whether slovakia, switzerland, all star teams or other teams like Denmark SHOULD lose. They're supposed to lose. You'd rather them just lose prettier in a more entertaining way, but in the end they should lose for things to be right. What if however, what if team European All-stars accidentally beats the US, what if one of the teams that is supposed to lose is a little rebellious and accidentally qualifies for the playoff ahead of the USA. Then you come back and tell me that you'd prefer an incomplete US team vs. Team European leftovers but an entertaining match indeed or the US making the playoff. It's a thin line, an intricate balance.

Switzerland or Slovakia would not be competitive teams? Really? Look at Canada vs Latvia from last olympics. Switzerland have silver medal from WHC 2013, for example.

Even teams like Latvia or France are usually a lot better than people want to admit.

Teams outside of the top 5 / 6 are way more competitive nowadays compared to past years.

7-1 Sochi, US vs. Slovakia.

Do you really want to go this direction?

Sochi 2014
Canada 3 - 1 Norway
Canada 2 - 1 Latvia
Sweden 1 - 0 Switzerland

That narrative is going to linger for a while...just like the Canada can't play on big ice BS we heard for so long. People just choose to believe whatever it is they want to believe.

Finland beat the US by five goals in Sochi, maybe Americans shouldn't be allowed to compete as an independent team in order to avoid blowouts.

First of all read my entire argument please.
Secondly, those games are akin to in football when the USA essentially put 10 players inside the 18 yard box against Belgium and dragged it to extra time, not that interesting, not that close either.

The NHL wants to feature as many stars as possible in the tournament is the reason. Obviously it is idiotic to put non-national teams in a supposedly international tournament, but Bettman and company can scarcely be accused of having many bright ideas.

To showcase McDavid & Eichel and, ultimately, to make money.

That's your answer.

I like it this way, gives the younger guys some international exposure in best on best tourneys. Might be better though if they had the young stars of all countries and not just the Us and Canada.

I don't think you have a good grasp on the USA player pool.

Jones
Eichel
Larkin
Saad

all would have a chance at this team.

It's not about competition, it's about having as many NHL players in the tournament as possible.

That doesn't even touch the integrity of an international tournament.

Canada/Latvia was competitive? Latvia's goalie was ridiculous, but that wasn't a competitive game.

It's an NHL/NHLPA event. Like was said, they want more NHLPA members playing. Yes, it's a money grab. People like money, it's crazy.

If you accept the tournament for what it is, instead of wanting or wishing it to be something it isn't, it's much less stressful. It's a gimmick. Going by the definition of the word, the Olympics are a gimmick too.

I'd be surprised if the NHL and the players didn't still agree to end up going to the Olympics. Everything is a business. They'll come to some sort of agreement eventually.

That's the only thing that makes this World Cup debacle at all stressful: the prospect of the NHL ruining the only best on best hockey we have by replacing it with garbage.

The day they agree to send NHLers in 2018 and 2022 is the day the World Cup ceases to bother me in any way.
