Forget it, boys and girls! There will be no WCoH in February '24. I'm sure the NHL will insist that some iteration of a NHL All-Stars from Russia on competing, and 3-4 or more other countries will tell the NHL to go get bent. And I side with those who tell the NHL to go get bent.

I'm probably too old to measure this anyways, because everything wears off with age. But yeah, today's TikTok/Minecraft generation probably doesn't even know what Olympics is. They probably think it has something to do with MrBeast.
We have so much entertainment to choose from these days you forget what is on. I missed the first period of the Bruins game this afternoon cause I was binge watching something else. Growing up we had 3 or 4 network channels and a few UHF channels if your dog ear antenna worked and it was not storming outside.

The way things are going it could be that in February 2024 hockey is at the very bottom of our minds what concerns us. I hope I'm wrong though but being pessimistic by nature I can't help fearing for the worst.

As for me, I can't imagine seeing Team Russia play for obvious reasons which can't be discussed here. Don't want them there, don't want them at the WJC, don't want them at the WCH.

Team Belarus - they weren't gonna make it anyway so doesn't really matter.

What I do want - real national teams. Slovakia, Switzerland, Germany plus the usual suspects. No gimmick teams please.

I always imagine explaining the World Cup of hockey to a soccer fan - "Well we have Team Europe and Team Young Stars and actually to everybody's surprise Team Europe made the finals."

Latvia and Denmark could field a competitive team too.

Sure. I am just going by the assumption that only 8 teams would play.

Having Slovakia, Germany and Switzerland maximizes star power and also audience potential of the tournament.

Plus it also copies the current IIHF ranking, well Germany is 9th but they make it because Russia is out.

Denmark would have ehler and anderson for star power.
Latvia has a few guys as well.

I don't want 10 teams but, in a best on best, the difference between those 5 teams - Slovakia, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland and Latvia is not that big. I honestly think if they played each other in a round robin that it'd be damn near tied after those games.

Germany obviously has Drai, Grubauer and Seider to their advantage. Swiss have a beauty forward corps and Josi (but no NHL goalie), Denmark has an NHL goalie and a star but gets thin after that, Slovakia has some shiny new toys and an NHL goalie (near the end of his career) and Latvia has an NHL goalie and a few pieces.

I'd like a playin to be honest! Note: Won't happen and your prediction is probably closer to reality.

I wouldn't mind a play in. I am fairly confident we'd finish top 3 in a round robin consisting of those 5 teams.

Plus the last time we had to qualify for something was the Olympics and we all know how that turned out.

Probably my fav Olympic medal of all time after Nagano. Was really happy for Slovakia. That and the supernovas going in first round a few months later for Slovakia.

Nice work...

When would those 4 nations qualify?

Why Swiss with a berth but not Germans?

I love the idea of a qualifier between those nations and I think it'd be insanely close!

I'd prefer both pools in North America. This is in February so the notion of Pasta, Jussi and Lias flying to Europe mid season to play a few games and then fly back for playoffs seems a bit off to me. More than happy to have it all in North America.

NHL announced plans for possibly wanting a division in Europe, whether that would happen remains to be seen. The logical choice would be to host in one continent. I chose Prague because both the IIHF and NHL seem to love hosting events there, and for good reason!

Qualifiers would ideally take place in September just before or during the preseason of 23/24, similar to Olympic qualifications for those years.

I went with Switzerland for the 6th spot following IIHF rankings. They technically hold the 7th spot in IIHF rankings and would normally play in qualifiers, but Russia at #3 is banned from IIHF competition and I'm assuming they stay banned here, so Switzerland would slide up to the #6 spot and automatically qualify (assuming the intent is to select the top 6 IIHF teams for automatic qualification).

Hope that clears up some questions!

I'm pretty sure that if Finland and Sweden are playing each other in Europe, it won't be in Prague. It will be in Stockholm, Helsinki or Tampere. That's what they did in 1996 and 2004 but that was in September. It would be logistically quite dumb to bring the players over to Europe in February.

I'm not the one who planned for a pool in Europe, thats an issue youd have to take up with the league planning it

Also I personally think Prague would be the perfect host city in Europe if they're doing a group there. Its hosted plenty of IIHF and NHL events and is well regarded by both organizations, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and is relatively easy for Swedish and Finnish hockey fans to travel to in Europe rather than fly across the pond. Reality though is youre probably be right in that theyd likely host it either in Stockholm/Gothenburg in Sweden or Tampere in Finland.

There is no need to play all the games in the same city if there are games in Europe. Czech Republic, Sweden, Finland and Germany all hosted games in both 1996 and 2004. They should take the same approach if they decide to play in Europe. Prague, Cologne, Berlin, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Helsinki, Tampere and Bern are all relatively close to each other.

I have a suggestion that’s 100% a gimmick, but here it is:

Assuming the World Cup takes place every 4 years, at the 2-year mark, the reigning champion country plays a team comprised of the rest of the world in a 7-game series (max 4 players per country).

Selfishly, this is because I want to see Canada vs the World, and I can’t see how else this could be brought into existence.

So what happens if the rest of the world wins and they are the reigning champs? Who do they play in 4 years?

There most probably will be the World Cup in February 2024. With or without Russia? That will probably be decided early into the 2023. If Russia continues its war against Ukraine, it is hard to imagine them being there. But still, we should keep in mind that the Summit Series or Canada Cup took place during the Cold War. Canada Cup was even taking place repeatedly. I am 50/50 on this. I would like to see the team Russia there because they are great players, at the same time it is barely imaginable to invite players who are (most of them) kind of supporting a regime committing war crimes. And again: It is not easy to judge them, because even the Russian NHLers still have family members in Russia and so on. It always sucks when hockey becomes affected by some dictator's whims.

If the rest of the world wins, they win. To them goes the glory.

“The World” plays the champion country of the tournament held two years later.
