Maybe you don’t understand it if your from a larger country , and especially hockey the smaller teams just don’t stand any chance. I bet a lot of people from smaller nations would rather see a team Europe almost win than to see their individual team lost every game 10-1
This person from a smaller country loves to watch Switzerland lose most of the times and win a match against the big teams every now and then.
This person from a smaller country hated that travesty of a team europe and hopes it will never see the light again

So you think German or Latvian fans would rather see themselves lose by 7 or 8 goals every game. And once again you probably are from one of the top 5 countries in terms of hockey strength so of course you wouldn’t know what it’s like to lose by such a large margain every game
If you look at my HF icon, under it is a basic profile, date joined, messages, likes, etc. At the bottom you will find "Home Page" with a link to a website on Austrian hockey. A website that I write myself.

If you were around these boards around the time the world cup format was announced you would have seen the reality. All the Slovak players, Slovak fans, Swiss players, Swiss fans etc. were extremely displeased with this decision and voiced it. All the fans as well of other smaller nations were displeased, and they voiced their displeasure too. It was virtually unanimous, while on the other side were a few Canadians and Americans who felt those teams contribute nothing to the tournament.

I don't know if you're from a small country or not, but your message does not speak to the opinion of fans from small countries. I know fans of those countries you mentioned in person, fans of those countries you mentioned frequent these boards, none of them were happy with this. I know Austrian fan clubs, booster clubs and fans who travel whatever the weather to go see us lose to Canada 9-1, or another team 9-1. I know the players, I know the coaches in our system. But not just that, I know Swedish players, Slovenian players, hockey OPs from those countries and from other countries as well.

I would say most people were understanding of the decision to omit us from the world cup. Understanding, but resentful, and certainly not supportive. Perhaps you do, but most Europeans do not associate with the general title "Europe" any more than a Brazilian might associate with the term "American." Having a player there is not "meaningful representation."

This is empirically proven in all the sporting realms. Look at the Olympics, where sports like Volleyball and Basketball will feature 12 teams even if only 3 or 4, sometimes even only 2 or perhaps only 1 team has a chance of winning. Or the World Cup, where dozens of teams have no chance to win the tournament and many do little but stack 10 men into the 22 yard box and pray. If people wanted to see super countries we wouldn't have teams from the AFC, we'd have "Team Asia." If people preferred what you ludicrously call "meaningful representation" there wouldn't be teams from CAF, there would be one "Team Africa." How many relay teams in swimming have a meaningful chance to win? Many end up something like a full length behind the leaders. Or even look at the Rugby World Cup where only four teams have ever won and only 5 teams have ever contended yet 20 teams are permitted and regularly result in scores like 65-3, 60-3, 54-9, etc. Representation of national squads who have no legitimate chance in tournaments is ubiquitous within sports, and that's inarguable.

You're free to hold your own opinion. I won't stop you there. To take your personal opinion and say that it represents everyone when there is no empirical evidence to demonstrate this is absurd.

So than by your logic why not make it only a 5 team tournament. Usa, Canada, sweden, finland and russia? Those are the only teams who stand a chance to win the tournament. And really the only teams who will compete with each other. So why even have the others there? Even finland and russia get lit up on occasion.
Yes but i expect a very strong finnsh team 2020! Rantanen,Aho,Laine,Tervainen,Granny,Risto,Maata etc. were better and better ;).

So you enjoy losing? My country Slovakia will never win a World Cup, wjc or even a world championship again. A team Europe is the only hope of seeing Slovak players get a medal. And I’m sure almost every other nation outside of top 5will never win a World Cup

I am from a small country Slovakia. There is simply no point in playing if you are going to never win. Why would Austrian fans travel to see loss 8-1, it’s just a representation of failure. If you are never going to be at the top than you should never participate. I say the same thing about football, very few teams have chance to win World Cup. Those teams who don’t have a chance, they should not be there. Look at teams from Africa, they will never win, so why are they there? For example Iceland should still just give up, they have no chance at winning, so there is no point in trying. And re: your other sports examples I’d say than those teams should not be in the tournament. And if all you can do is sit back and hope than you are a failure and your development is useless. If all you can do is sit back and hope for an upset than your country and team is nothing and should not be there. Whenever a Slovak team loses, its over that’s it. If austria were to play in World Cup and let’s say win 1 game against Latvia. That is still a failure. Just like if Slovakia were to win one game. If you don’t finish first than you might as well be last. There’s no second places or even bronze, those do not matter. If you aren’t at the top than you are at the bottom. And the only teams who ever have a chance to be at the top are the big 5.

Again, you're free to hold whatever opinions you like. However, I hope you are aware that you are in the overwhelming minority in this case.

As a Swiss, I may not enjoy losing, but I accept it as a fair outcome while enjoying to see my country strive to become better, and accepting that in all likelihood you will lose is the price to pay when you want to measure yourself against the best.
Btw, in Swiss hockey there is a word for those who only follow a team if the team is winning: Modefan, i.e. "fan because it is fashionable to be fan of [Team X]", and to me, that's not what being a fan is about.

Hope it happens and there are 16 countries involved. You could also do some qualification of the lower nations as well. They probably wouldn't win the event but it'd be nice to show people how many countries actually play hockey. Qualification would involve the 9-24 ranked teams with 8 games and the winners of the games qualifying for the World Cup.

Are you a time traveler from late 90'? Because that's probably the last time I've seen countries outside of top 6 getting regularly outplayed by such margins.

These would all be under PepsiCo.. conflict of interest, would never happen.

I like that idea, although it would be a lot easier to just team up with IIHF and use there rankings. Teams already play so many international games, adding more is rough.

why not have a pre-tournament qualifier? very simple have countries ranked 7 to 12 (6 teams) play 1 game round robin so each team would play 5 games and then the top two teams qualify for the World Cup.

So right now you would have: Canada, Russia, Sweden, Finland, USA and Czech automatically qualify

Then for the pre-tournament qualifier you would have: Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Belarus, Slovakia and Latvia.(Top 2 countries of the pre-qualifier qualifies for the World Cup.)

And total the World Cup would have 8 teams divided in 2 groups of 4.

I agree wholeheartedly! As a Canadian, I would loooovvve to see the maple leaf return to the world cup of football. Of course they'd be outclassed horribly, but that'd be far more enjoyable to watch than a concacaf/conmebol "Team Americas" leftover team. I imagine most European hockey (Swiss, German, Slovak, Austrian, Slovene, Danish, etc) fans feel the same way.

That would require other leagues be involved which the NHL won't like. Most of the countries outside of the top few have a good chunk of their players in Europe. Plus, European leagues start much earlier than NHL.

The 2016 tournament was great. It was just poorly named and marketed. It was an NHL tournamet and probably should've been called the NHL Classic or something. But TNA was great fun to watch.

If they do it again, I hope they do away with the gimmick teams but I won't hold my breath. Now, I don't think there is any way Eichel, Matthews and McDavid (among others) are doing that again. They're playing for their nations.

Anyway, back to the original question, yes, they will do it again. Labour unrest not withstanding.

Bottom 2 teams play in the next qualifier.
