Tatar hasn't impressed me since the 2009 WJC. I don't understand how he put up the numbers he did in Montreal.

I somewhat question the idea that the team gets tougher with Slafkovsky. When he's off the wall, I don't think he's imposing at all. And he has as much a defensive conscience as Hughes at the same age, which is to say very little. He doesn't seem like a power forward beyond his puck protection skills.
I really like his defensive game it’s something he’s been noted as having because his team in LIIGA was very defensive. He’s already really good at getting in shot lanes when his point man has the puck, he tracks back well, he’s good on the wall in the dzone, doesn’t fly by and he’s always seems to be in good positions whether the other team is already in the zone or they’re breaking out.

Also not sure what you mean by he’s not imposing off the wall? He downs t throw big open ice hits?
Like he’s great at using his reach and IQ to steal pucks, he’s good at puck protecting.

I guess everyone's a power forward then. Every NHL player should use their body to win board battles....
Not every player can man. Lol
You might’ve missed the key work “win”

Yes he is a big bitch that can make plays with a player on him or fight his way to areas that other players can’t or won’t.
If he uses his body correctly , he has the skill, strength , size to give opponents a handful if he comes off the wall and decides to drive to the net or slot. Once there , he has very good vision and passing ability. I thi k the combo of size and skill will make everyone on his line better. Players will have to focus on him and that should make room for guys like Hughes/ Bratt. Huhes and Bratt with more time = deadly.

Here are my notes on the CZE vs. AUS game:

Jiricek:
- There really isn't much to talk about his performance in this game. He was a stay-at-home defenseman against an AUS team that barely generated any offense. He had no noteable takeaways or other defensive plays, however he didn't make any mistakes either. His game is a simple, smart one.

- He doesn't produce much offense at all. He does get PP time, however CZE's PP was really bad. He'd be the puck carrier through the neutral zone and do the classic back pass to a teammate with speed. One time he did control the puck over the blue line, however he was met with three AUS defenders who immediately stripped him of the puck and dumped it down the ice. His only other offensive possession, he walked the line for the first time this tournament. He blew a tire, but recovered nicely. He then went down the half wall for the first time this tournament and... he blew a tire again.

- Only other note is that I wanted him to be tougher to play against. While he's smooth and steady in his own end, he doesn't apply much pressure. Granted, his team was up by one all game and he didn't want to take a penalty, however I would've liked to see him apply his large frame on opponents more. It's not like he's doing anything wrong but if he's playing a stay-at-home game, I'd like to see a bit more edge.

Thanks for these. I don't have time to watch all the games right now, and these scouting reports are top-notch and extremely helpful.

Thank you for the post.
I want to see some Okhotiuk in him. Step up once in awhile and throw a hit. Not sure why but we have zero D that do that. Not sure if it’s planned or the system they play or told not to take themselves out of the play but I can count on one hand how many big hits our D had last year in open ice.

Agree to disagree. I think your entire description is hyperbolic. He's not "great" at any of those things (outside of work along the wall). If he's "great" then Wright must be a future Selke winner.

Re: the power forward thing, he's very passive with his checking and stickwork - a pure finesse player right now and pretty typical of young scorers at the top of the draft. It's fine if you can see the play develop (which he often can) but with his reach, he has the capacity to force more turnovers than he does.

By the way, I'm still good with drafting him. I'm nitpicking because this stuff will carry over to our team. I think he will help but the speed and aggression at the next level will be a test for his calm presence on the ice.

Sorry but he Forces lots of turnovers using his reach and IQ. He’s created quite a few chances turning pucks over in the first 3 games (haven’t watched the 4th yet)

And sure am we can agree to disagree but I must add that he is really good at taking away his point man’s shooting lane from what I’ve seen.

Well that's something he will learn as he adapts to the NA game.

When he becomes the small fish in a big pond, he will learn some tough lessons....and be all the better for it as a player.

Gillies was apparently on the roster, but they haven't even used him. Not even after the Nedeljkovic injury. I figured he'd be starting today against a weak British team, but nope, he's been shelved over there too. They called Jeremy Swayman and brought him in. I didn't think they'd play Strauss Mann again today and figured they'd give Gillies a shot, but I don't think we're gonna be seeing him.
