  • Paco Lopez: Rode horses at Aqueduct (NY) and Monmouth (NJ) today. Successful numbers at Monmouth is nothing new for him but he is 15 9-0-1 with back-to-back 4-win days on July 4 and July 5.
  • Steve Asmussen was 0-for-13 at last count today. He is 1-for-22 the past two days.

Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Card: The penultimate card of the meet. It appears Manny Franco (jockey) and Chad Brown (trainer) will top meet titles.
  • Flavien Prat finished 8 3-2-0 and is having an exceptional meet. He is 27% this meet which leads the 22 jockeys with 2+ wins.
  • Race 1: Showcase (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher), a $300,000 Uncle Mo colt, romped by more than seven lengths in a race limited to first-timers.
  • Race 2: Domestic Product (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the Grade 3 $200,000 Dwyer Stakes in a romp. The time was a little more than one second slower that Hall of Famer Easy Goer's performance in 1989.
  • Race 6: Trikari (John Velazquez/Graham Motion) won the $750,000 Grade I Belmont Derby Invitational.
  • Race 8: Mullikin (Flavien Prat/Rodolphe Brisset) won the $200,000 Grade 2 John A Nerud Stakes.
  • Race 9: Cinderella's Dream (William Buick/Charlie Appleby) won the $500,000 Grade I Belmont Oaks Invitational in a track-record-setting time of 1:53.42. The 3-year-old Great Britian-bred filly is 6 5-0-0 lifetime and raced in America for the first time. Welcome to America!

Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Canceled: Saturday's card was transferred to Monday. Sunday's card (tomorrow) remains on schedule.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edgard Zayas rode four winners aboard 10 mounts.
  • Saffie Joseph won four times, three of the wins came with Edgard Zayas on board. He finished 9 4-2-2.
Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Gerardo Corrales rode four winners.
  • Steve Asmussen has been cold this meet, currently sporting a 20 1-2-2 record.
Belterra (Ohio):
  • Race 1: Rollin My Way (Perry Ouzts/Barbara Riley) won the opener and paid $23 in a short field of four. Ouzts celebrates his 70th birthday tomorrow.

Horseshoe Indiana (Indiana):
  • Record Handle: More than $8 million wagered at Indiana today for the track's signature card. The figure established a track record. Good track and simulcast feed.
  • Card: Eight of the 12 races had six-figure purses.
  • Race 10: Fuente Ovejuna (Corey Lanerie/Brendan Walsh) won the $100,000 general Assembly Distaff Handicap by a neck in a 4-horse across-the-wire bonanza.
  • Race 11: Chatalas (Antonio Fresu/Grant Forster) won the Grade 3 $200,000 Indiana Oaks.
  • Race 12: Dragoon Guard (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Indiana Derby. The lightly raced 3-year-old son to Arrogate was out for the fourth time and in a graded stakes for the first time. He is 4 3-0-0. Arrogate may have been a better sire than racehorse if that is possible, a stunning talent; but, his premature death curtailed that discussion.

Prairie Meadows (Iowa):
  • Card: Not complete.
  • Race 7: Just Basking (Chris Landeros/Ian Wilkes) won the $225,000 Iowa Oaks.
  • Race 6: White Sands (Joe Bravo/Wesley Ward) won by a significant margin -- 13+ lengths -- to claim victory in the $100,000 Prairie Gold Juvenile Stakes.
Los Alamitos (California):
  • Race 9: Sweet Azteca (Juan Hernandez/Michael McCarthy) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Great Lady M Stakes in track-record-setting time of 1:14.33 for 6 1/2 furlongs. The filly is now a multiple graded stakes winner after just five races and is 5 4-0-1 lifetime.

  • Saffie Joseph had five winners. at last check, only Steve Asmussen and Jamie Ness have more training victories in North America this year.
  • Flavien Prat is having an exceptional year and I wouldn't be surprised if he wins Jockey of the Year if this continues.

Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Closing Day:Saratoga starts July 11 and runs into early September.
    • Saratoga: 7/11/2024-9/2/2024
    • Aqueduct by any other name: 11/7/2024-12/29/2024
  • Leading Jockey: Manny Franco with 37 wins.
  • Leading Trainer: Chad Brown with 27 wins.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Card: 10 races, including three stakes and a handicap. One of the biggest cards of the year for the lone T-bred track in the state.
  • Reminder: Delaware's canceled card from yesterday (Saturday) will be run tomorrow (Monday).
  • Handle: $4.6 million.
  • Race 9: Honor D Lady (Jose Ortiz/Saffie Joseph) trounced the field to twin the Grade 2 $500,000 Delaware Handicap. The Honor Code filly is now a three-time graded stakes winner, the prior two Grade 3.
  • Race 8: War Like Goddess (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott), a 7-year-old English Channel mare, won the Grade 3 $250,000 Robert Dick Memorial Stakes. Goddess is 20 12-2-3 with more than $2.7 million earned. She was purchased for $30,000.
  • Race 6: Auto Glide (Julien Leparoux/Greg Compton) won a thriller in the $175,000 Battery Park Stakes. Compton, a trainer for around 20 years, is having arguably his best year and this is one of his biggest wins.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Saffie Joseph won four times for the second straight day. He finished the past three days at his home track 29 11-8-5 (24/29 in the money). Eight of his 11 wins came with Edgard Zayas riding, the do teamed 17 times.
Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Brian Lynch, with three wins, is the lone trainer with more than two victories. Early on but Steve Asmussen and Brendan Walsh have cold barns with just three wins with 38 starters.

Louisiana Downs (Louisiana):
  • Card: Canceled (hurricane).
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Card: Re-scheduled from Monday. The card had 10 races including four stakes.
  • Handle: $3.6 million.
  • Race 9: Power Squeeze (Javier Castellano/Jorge Delgado) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Delaware Oaks by a nose against Sidamara (Jose Ortiz/Bill Mott) in rare Delaware appearances by two of America's biggest known riders and former Eclipse Award winners. As the track caller stated "A thrilling edition of the Delaware Oaks."
  • Race 8: Desvio (Ben Curtis/Madison Meyers) won the $150,000 Kent Stakes at 9-to-1. Desvio had raced his entire career in Maryland (six starts). He withstood a jockey's objection (fourth place finisher) in the stretch. Curtis came to the US via Europe last year. Meyers as just 30 lifetime wins but three stakes victories and is based in Maryland.

NYRA is having a tough week. Saratoga buoys that circuit, at least until Belmont is resurrected, as evidenced by the tremendously popular Belmont Stakes 4-day meet. Aqueduct has been rendered to just another track and its future is well-documented.

"NYRA’s handle numbers from last week were impacted by a significant decrease in field size and a reduction in the total number of races carded when compared with the July 4 week in 2023, which was held at Belmont Park rather than Aqueduct," NYRA vice president of communications Patrick McKenna said. "The removal of all NYRA content from TVG/Fanduel beginning on July 4 played a relatively minor role in NYRA’s overall handle figures from July 4-July 7."

Linda Rice, part owner, is quoted in the article that she is glad the claim was voided. Situations like these are not necessarily limited to horse racing as human error can determine fate unjustly. The winning owner will collect the proper purse money but the handicapper of the DQ'd horse gets to collect winnings while the handicapper of the elevated-victor has another tale of woe.

Also, maybe the original winning connections did see the error and decided to play it cute. I doubt that happened but whether that is the case or not, they aren't a victim. It is up to connections to see inaccuracies when they are given the conditions of the race days in advance and they are all culpable for the screw-up by the racing office. Their eyes could have seen the error but no camp noticed. Thus, unintentionally perhaps, they messed up as well.

In a recent Breeders' Cup, a horse was inadvertently scratched for mere seconds while near the starting gate. The horse was re-entered and won but for purse money only. Handicappers with that winning horse had a kick in the pants.

There was a college football game many years ago in which a team won on a fifth down. Prior to when replay reviews became a common practice. IIRC, the team that benefitted eventually split a national title.

In horse racing, once a race goes "official" on tote, the handicapper knows whether he or she won or lost. As in this case, however, there is something that can be altered to the benefit or dismay of connections but not the bettor.
