Hate u in hockey Finland , but congratulations as a real hockeynation you deserved this gold!! But stay away from the seniors gold, we want a tripple.

And please win against Sweden next year in the roundrobin, you need to break that curse so Sweden can focus on the gold next year.

First of all, you are wrong. Football (soccer) is much more popular in Finland. There are also several other fairly popular sports. Some figures in a Finnish language article for you:
Koripallobuumi kasvaa, harrastajamäärä silti kaukana salibandysta

Secondly, you conveniently ignore that US has 60 times the population...roughly.

In any case, silver is a great achievement and they did play very very well.

Football is not more popular, not even close. Everyone plays Hockey at winter and Football at summer when they are kids, then they quit football. For some time, football serves as good thing to do when there is no hockey. No need to lie here, because thats the way it goes. Getting to football League doesnt make you a living. If it looks like you wouldnt make it to the Liiga or close to it, then you select football because its easier there. Thats the way it always goes for most, what you said is just wishful thinking of football people. Of course everyone plays football when they are kids, daa, wheres the news.

Hockey is the sport you want to play in, because there is hundreds of spots in the homeland league that pay you diploma engineer payout or better, but its not like absolutely dominant, of course football still gets alot of players and skiing and all the other sports. Its not like 50% just play hockey. Also today hockey might be becoming too expensive for poorest families to support, and probably is.

It depends what you mean by popular.
If we mean only registered players, then sure soccer is the most popular.
However it's because hockey is so expensive that most families can't afford to support their childrens hockey.

Overall hockey is clearly the most popular sport in Finland.
Most fans, best paying pro teamsport etc.
From the people i know maybe 10-20%
Is soccer fans.
But pretty much everyone is a hockeyfan.
Atleast from males.

It's not even close. Hockey is the national sport in finland.

If there's one thing I didn't expect to happen, it was Finland beating both Canada and USA in North American soil in a NHL sized rink.

Feels pretty good right about now.

Now I understand why so many people thought that the disallowed US goal should have counted. I tried to find the clip from the same angle they showed in the Finnish HD broadcast but every video in youtube Iv'e seen so far doesn't have it.

In the Finnish HD broadcast they showed the incident in front & slightly from the left and from that angle you can clearly see that Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was covering the puck, almost had closed the glove to the ice within the puck inside the glove but the US player struck his skate there as well and kicked the puck away. I'll try to find that clip but so far none of the videos on youtube had it yet.

Some streamer has a video in youtube where he watched the whole game, but the problem is he plays Fortnite in between the periods... :/

Best athletes in Finland play hockey. It's the most popular sport by a mile.

Best athletes in the USA have a lot of other options for sports to play. More accessible options. More practical options based on location, culture, and income level.

So the fact we are competing in hockey against other nations top athletes and coming away with the silver is pretty impressive imho.
Mmmmyeh... you guys also have 59 times more people than Finland.

Was this the same arena where the USA trounced Finland at the olympics 9 years ago? At least the same city so one can say that this was a payback.

What is it with some North-American fans having to always make player vs. player and team on paper vs. ice comparisons.

”Finland would lose in a best vs best to Canada’s D-team, hahaha!!!”

Yes, Finland is not the best ice-hockey country in the world. But, the results look good atm, at least for the U20 teams. And I for one like to cheer for a group that overachieves (this applies also to other countries in hockey).

And I thought this game was so even that no one should or could complain about the wrong team winning (never truly understood this concept anyway).

Anyway, gg

I could never dream of our young Lions creating this winning culture. Three finals in six years and three golds in six years just tastes too good to be true!

We can't promise to stay out of men's world championship gold medal this year.
It depends a lot how good team we have in men's world championships.

Unfortunately nowadays it's getting hard to play hockey outdoors because the winters are becoming shorter and shorter, with many more 0 degree days than proper negative temperatures that we used to have when I was a kid (every winter = meters of snow and -20 C almost every day from end of Nov until early April). It might show up in the amount of Finnish hockey players in 15 - 20 years from now.

But how many so called promising players burst in NHL ?
Finland actually has an all-time high amount of NHL players at the moment :) And since Kurri and Selänne, we hadn't had anyone even close to leading the league in scoring like Rantanen. Not to mention Laine, Aho, Barkov, Heiskanen, Kotkaniemi, etc. We have a bright future coming up!

I quess other countries have more future NHL players than Finland but somehow that don't correlate their success in tournaments.
Yes the number of finnish NHL-Players are rising. Incl. Top-Players. 4 Finns in All Star game. That s never happen before. The future is bright!
