What formidable players were unable to participate in the WJC since they were playing in the NHL?

This is a typical excuse by us Canadian fans but when you really look at it, there are lots of great young players unable to play for other countries.

Imagine if the Swiss had both Hischier this year!

Kotkaniemi and Heiskanen from Finland.

Also Vesalainen "didn't feel like it".

This makes Swiss performance even more impressive.

Top teams have enough depth to overcome the loss of blue Chip prospect, but for a team like Switzerland it should be very tough.

Hischier's birthday is today.....as a 20-year old, he still would've been eligible to play? Or do you just have to be under 20 when the tourney starts?

You just have to be under 20 when the tournament starts. Ryan Ellis turned 20 partway through the tournament one year.

More accurately, isn't it that you just have to be a birthyear 1999+? Suppose there is a guy born 27 december 1998. He'd still be 19 entering the tournament but I don't think he'd be eligible.

Close, but not correct. You have to be under 20 before the 1st of january the year it ends(so if a player turns 20 the 31st of december or earlier during the tournament they're ineligible, but if they turn 20 the 1st of january or later they're eligible to play.)

Correct. Urho Vaakanainen is the oldest eligible player possible. Turned 20 on January 1st this year. His date of birth is January 1st 1999.

Vilardi was made available but didn't make the team. He's since been returned to juniors. Not applicable to this thread.

He actually made the team but was injured. Little bit of a difference
