yup - reffing was a joke all tourney. Willander didn't commit an infraction, that wasn't a hold. He also played a great game. I see the usual idiots are out bashing him already. What a cesspool

Cannot agree with this enough, definitely not wjc specific either.
Tough L for Sweden, but a very clever goal for Finland.
Heartbreak for Wilander and Sweden.....he was the victim of a soft call, but you just knew that after putting Finland down man in OT, they'd be looking for some sort of 'even-up' call.
Swedes dominated the last half of this game, but their World Jr. jinx continues.....only two championships in their history.
Really the game came down to Sweden's failure to score with a 4-3 PP in OT. And for whatever reason Wilander hardly saw the ice on the PP. despite having the best point-shot on the team.
Biggest winners might be the U.S. Their trip to the gold medal now goes through Czechia and Finland.....teams they really should dominate.

Yeah when I was watching that play I was admiring the typical textbook Willander 1 on 1 defense. Competing hard, hounding the puck carrier up the wall and staying right on the man until he's out of the zone or stripped of the puck.
Basically all the elements that make him one of the best defensive prospects in the world.
And they somehow call a penalty on the play..??? Just because they need to make the PPs in OT even? Absolute trash reffing

100 percent. That is a play that a good D does 15 times a game. Pathetic joke of a call at any point, but in overtime? My God.

Exactly.
Once again the referees insist on make idiotic decisions to decide games on nothing physical engagements. The Gibson one was bad but at least a precedent had been set in that game and Canada had played so poorly and undisciplined this tourney that you could accept it.
This one. The Swedes had outplayed Finland handily it was a pretty clean game and then on what looked like textbook stiff defending they decide to inject themselves and it ended Swedens quest for Gold. It's just so unreasonable and wrong on so many levels i just cant wrap my head around it.
On Willander.
Thought he had an excellent game. Started like everyone a little tentative.
Thought the goal at net front was mostly Lindstein not staying with his guy or communicating a switch off.
There was a couple shifts where he made cut backs that would have been problematic at the NHL level which he got away with.
Outside of those specific moments...
Spotless defending. spotless outlet passes and at supporting the offence.
He wasn't activating much but he was also playing his role and when they needed the defense to push a little in the 3rd he started to do more. The quick goal put the reigns on.
That penalty was pathetic. Those refs should be ashamed of ruining all those kids from Sweden's great game with that joke of a decision.
He plays a pro game. Passes are hard and accurate. Skating is NHL positive. Very smart movements and positioning. Tremendous gap control. If he can play like he did this tourney in the NHL he's gonna be a stud. He will have to watch his cut backs because NHLers will close him out if he doesn't do them harder and faster but he looks great in every other aspect minus being a PP savant and rusher

I guess Wilander is wearing the goat horns for that late penalty, but unfortunately the kid who let the side down was the goaltender.......might be some the weakest goals allowed of any game in the tournament so far.

Willander has real talent and sometimes you see him really dialed in, but he also has some casual Kev in him. Nothing really bad, but just not the level of intensity and effort you'd want to see every shift in big games. If he can get his intensity and focus up on a consistent basis he can be a great player.

Beautiful rush by him just now creates a great chance, like seeing that he wants to take charge and make the big play in a big moment rather than just go through the motions.
At 5'10" and 185, ASP is going to struggle in the pros. I'd think a year to two in the AHL is probably what he'll need to adjust to the smaller NA rink.
As opposed to Wilander......who's basically a 'plug in and play' player at the NHL-level.
3vs 3 ot for the gold. Sheesh…. Can’t they just let them go 5 on 5 for a full 20? Is this what 2026 Olympics would be too?
