Can't really get worked up about another face-plant by Canada.....it was obvious from almost the first game of the tournament that they weren't nearly good enough.

Somehow fitting that the winner by Czechs came on a late PP.....TSN panel was whining about the penalty calls, but that kneeing penalty has been called all tournament long.

The challenge on the goal was dumb and so was not mixing the lines until the last game in the third period.

It's the IIHF they call the game close especially when it comes to player safety. Canada was somewhat lucky there last kneeing penalty wasn't a five because it seemed worse than the first kneeing penalty.

The whining from TSN was nauseating

Dave Cameron just gave one of the worst coaching performances I’ve ever seen. From selection process, to lack of discipline, to no practices, to desperate challenges…just an absolute tire fire.

He was a horrible NHL coach too and the Ottawa 67s aren't exactly having a good season so no idea why they decided to go with him.

I was like this when I saw Mckennas ice time shoot up.
but I was like this when I saw Mckenna being put on Cowans line
Berkley Catton gets 13 minutes of ice time.

Team Canada management and the coaching since hes also part of the selection process, needs to be overhauled. .

turns out Cowan wasn't even at the selection camp.

I know TSN tries to fill the skies with lofty rhetoric about this tournament, but recent World Juniors are falling pretty flat.

Without Russia, and with the U.S. such a dominant team, the WJHC is losing its' luster fast.

Hockey Canada needs to go back to the drawing board and review the entire selection method of picking a team. They have a couple of mini-training camps in the summer and in November, and then pluck players from all over the map, including the CHL, NCAA and even the AHL.

Most of these guys have never played together before and it shows.....their third period tonight was probably their best of the entire tournament, but it was too little, too late.

I realize that every team in this tournament has the same problem--but for whatever reason, they just look more in sync to me. Maybe it is coaching--and this is Dave Cameron's third goal-around the bench. Aren't there some younger guys out there?

Yeah, clusterf*** all around.

14 players from the OHL, 7 from the WHL, 3 from anywhere else.

Basically there seemed to be a goal to take as many OHL players as possible to a WJC in Ottawa. In addition to many, many other problems.
That’s Canada as a nation in a nutshell these days. From the top down, the focus is on bureaucracy instead of results.

Dave Cameron being named as coach shows how polluted Hockey Canada remains. He's awful, never won a thing in his almost 30-year coaching career, unless it's been part of Team Canada, and even then, he was heading up the national junior team that had the historical collapse against the Russians in 2011. An inexcusable hire.

they could play exhibitions against whl, ohl and qmjhl sides. also the ntdp probably
That would be better than nothing. But it wouldn’t be the USNTDP where players move to Plymouth and play full seasons as a team with younger players working their way up the depth chart.

If I was paying to go see this tournament I would want to see the best players representing Canada. Not players I could see play anytime in the OHL for probably much cheaper tickets. Such a dumb way to pick a team because the majority of people don’t give a shit in Canada where the players are from. They literally took a dump on the people who payed to see this shit with the team they picked

Can’t wait until he resurfaces again to coach the 2032 world juniors. Hockey Canada likes this guy too much

Which is why it’s baffling to leave so much skill out of the line up. Not enough time to perfect a cohesive team system (especially with no f***ing practice time) so individual skilll will probably win out.

Canada does seem to pick a "team" that slots guys into particular roles. 2 scoring lines, checking, line, energy line. Go more 2 way D vs Dmen with higher end offense.
But, in games where they need more goalscoring, they don't have the pure skill to get the extra goals. Round robin, you play the 4 games in like 6 days. Think every nation has to play a b2b. And you get an early afternoon game, so limited to no practice time.

It's cause you bring in dinosaurs who try and assemble a roster based on this pre-2010 template:

Skill line
Skill line
Shutdown/Gritty line
Energy line/Goon line

Energy lines were once useful in an era where you needed enforcers or guys to deliver major hits in these tournaments. I see no use for them now as the game at the lower level protects players from getting pulverized. The best way to shutdown the opposing top line is by puck possession which requires SKILL!

The energy line is pointless now as you have outlined. Last night's game is also a good example. The IIHF cracks down on unsafe plays which also makes the players hesitant to deliver bigger hits.

When Canada won those five medals in a row, Finland and the Czech programs were weak. Sweden was just recovering from a terrible stretch with its program. Furthermore, the USA underperformed at those tournaments for the most part as well. The 2006 team wasn't strong but they played a grinding game and relied on Pogge who was unreal at the tournament. Currently, the grinding system doesn't work at this tournament and I doubt it will ever will again.

Canada has five gold medals in the last 15 years. They have also benefitted from playing a lot of home tournaments. The talent is there but Hockey Canada needs to take a more forward-thinking approach but I can't see that happening.
