With razor thin margins of making the playoffs, a golden powerplay goose ended up being the difference maker between Montreal making it over Columbus

So many might have forgot that Columbus traded Patrik Laine to Montreal last offseason. And after blowing out his knee in a preseason game many thought Laine was done for the season. Before Laine made his season debut on december 3rd 2024, Montreal was 31st in the league with a record of 8-13- 3 in 24 games with Chicago Blackhawks just 1 point behind them. It seemed like Montreal was done for the season. But Laine started turning things around on the powerplay and ended up with 15 powerplay goals overall. That's good enough for 4th overall in the whole NHL this season. The guys infront of him all got to play either with Kucherov or McDavid on the powerplay. Montreal's record after Laine joined the team on December 3rd is 32-18-8 in 58 games, good enough for 12th in the NHL over that timeperiod.

Well 15 powerplay goals isn't that impressive you might say. Well since the dawn of time a Montreal Canadiens player has only been able to put up at least 15 powerplay goals in a single season 23 times. That's less times than they've been able to win the Stanley cup so far. And for Columbus Blue Jackets it's only happened twice and once was by the late great Rick Nash. Columbus could've needed those powerplay goals as they only scored a combined 36 powerplay goals the whole year.

On top of that Laine also cut a great heel promo that got a lot of heat before Montreal was facing Columbus in their home town on December 23rd. In the short run that fired up Columbus and gave them an extra 4 points that night and had them going on a little run afterwards. But the long term effects of that promo actually benefited Montreal as their record is 10th best overall from December 23rd onwards.

Despite this Laine still gets a lot of shit from many Montreal fans and reading their forum it seems like many of them want him gone or playing for pennies moving forward. Is Montreal going to kill the golden powerplay goose that got them to the playoffs in the first place? And where will Laine end up after that? Is there still hope for him? As a Leafs fan I would love to see him in Toronto, as Laine is one of the few players that said he would like to play in Toronto before getting drafted.

The difference was Carolina iced an AHL in Montreal's final game.
Yeah but that's only one game, we're talking about the whole season here. Can't fault Brindamour for that as he's allowed to pull his best players. In a perfect world the best players should be forced to play all 82 games if they're healthy!

If you are relying on some other team to play their best players and win a game in the last couple of games of the season, you're gonna have a bad time.

Too bad for Columbus, they were a great story this year.

I'm not going to comment on Mulletman's latest nonsensical ramblings.

If I’m picking one of the new guys who made the most impact and change to the Habs making the playoffs, I’m definitely not saying it’s Laine. There’s this other guy who might be just a bit more important: Lane Hutson.

You can take any piece of positive data and say “that’s what got them there” when margins of making it and not making it are thin. The entire concept of “this one thing” made the difference is a fallacy. The results of an 82 game season are the result of an incomprehensibly complex series of events.

You could also argue maybe that if Laine was healthy the whole years the Habs would have made the playoffs comfortably.

So yeah. Habs making the playoffs over Columbus isn't the result of just *one* thing.

The real takeaway is Montreal made the playoffs because they won a game - that, at times, was close - against a training camp level group in Carolina.

Whatever you are smoking let me know what it is because I want some of that too

I thought the reason was that Canes rested their star players? Laine scored 1 point past 9 games.

This isn't even the most important trade (for the 24-25 season) that the Habs made in 2024.

Laine was a good bet and we are definitely making the playoffs in part because of his contributions but he has been borderline unplayable for the past month and one of the most frustrating players to watch at 5 on 5 and on the PP I've ever seen in my life

It's a little bit disappointing and I'm sure Colombus and Jets fans can relate lol

Laine still has a solid role on the team and 'should' be a little better next year if he haves a healthy summer

I’m gonna go against other people rant and say that he does have a point. Montréal has made the playoff for a lot of different reason, and like it or not, Laine is one of them. When he came back from injury the team got a boost.

And his powerplay goal definitely gained us a game or a couple (which is enough to make the difference in making vs not making the playoff this year), and while is play is poor 5v5, he doesn’t cost a lot of goal.

So I would say if Montreal didn’t acquire Laine, they might not make the playoff 2025. This does NOT mean he was the most important factor.
