So what should they do? Dive into the trade market, or just carry it on like it is and hope it's enough for a playoff spot?

Do not need to do anything with that cap space. Historically bubble teams have wisely stayed away from big acquisitions. They either stay pat, or grab something from the bargain bin (4th-5th round pick territory). Do not expect DRW to buck the trend.

Is Copp a Top 6 center on Detroit? If a trade doesn't include either a legit top 6 center or top 4 defensemen with term, do nothing IMO.
Come next year if Kasper does show signs he can hold down the 2nd line then I would start trading for rentals.
Other then a Luke Schenn type to play on the bottom pairing, I’d keep an eye on Ristolainen if Detroit can’t get Byrum or K’Andre Miller. Neither of whom has their big contract yet, and if they don’t get it by the deadline, there’s a real good chance they file for arbitration before signing one.Seth Jones?
Yeah, that would suck to have Hellebyuck.By the same people who were pissed that he didn't trade for EK65 or Hellebuyck lmao.
Just because a GM has cap space doesn't mean they immediately want to waste it on an anchor contractSeth Jones?
I would do this but then flip some capital to buy a forward and a D to help with the stretch runWhat might be a good idea, is the Wings take on cap retention from big contracts willing to be moved where they get extra draft picks, prospects, etc.
I've unironically been saying this for years. Can't score on us playing for us!Detroit should trade for Laughton, to remove the risk that Philly will send him to an Atlantic team who can have him hang 20 goals a year on the Wings.
