Do not need to do anything with that cap space. Historically bubble teams have wisely stayed away from big acquisitions. They either stay pat, or grab something from the bargain bin (4th-5th round pick territory). Do not expect DRW to buck the trend.

I mean I can see them doing something. I just don't see it being something that would walk on July 1st.

Like, if Calgary were to put Rasmus Andersson out there (Which I doubt at this stage) I could see them showing interest. But it's gotta be somebody that fits the Larkin and under age bracket and is still contract controlled.

If a trade doesn't include either a legit top 6 center or top 4 defensemen with term, do nothing IMO.

Come next year if Kasper does show signs he can hold down the 2nd line then I would start trading for rentals.

Is Copp a Top 6 center on Detroit?

Other then a Luke Schenn type to play on the bottom pairing, I’d keep an eye on Ristolainen if Detroit can’t get Byrum or K’Andre Miller. Neither of whom has their big contract yet, and if they don’t get it by the deadline, there’s a real good chance they file for arbitration before signing one.

Teams do not want good young Dmen hitting arbitration because they will win big awards and walk themselves to UFA, with all trade powers. Owners and managers handing out all the massive deals to unproven Dmen will make any arbitration hearing laughable. Then the dman will get a short term deal at a very high AAV. Holding all cards on any trades too, as they’ll just pull a Debrincat.

So they either have to give them the long-term wealth contract or trade them. It’s that simple.

It’s those two dmen who are worth watching first. Then Ristolainen who’s become a really solid dman, and he fits Yzerman’s type of D. Big men who can move the puck, yet responsible. That’s what he’s turned into.

As for Seth? Think it’s a real possibility IF they’re comfortable with where his game is at, and he’d agree. He’s been really good since the trade ask.

If there’s a team who has the room, the need and can easily pay any price the Hawks would want, it’s Detroit. They’d probably actually pay the price for long term retention too. Once again, as long as they think he’d buy in.

Imagine him and Edvinsson together and how much ice they can cover in about 2 seconds. They could be one of the hardest pairings to play against that we’ve seen in years.

That all said, haven’t heard anything about Jones to Detroit.

The Wings almost traded for Justin Faulk last year from what I had heard last January. I actually think he’d fit well for what they want except for his money corresponding with the role they’d ask of him. So don’t think they’d make that move with how their D-Core is forming long term.

People will want to panic after these two loses but they dominated most of tonight. They just lost their two best players, when it comes to those who do all the dirty work every night. Rasmussen is coming back next game though, and we can assume any C they do get, will have some of Copp’s game in him defensively.

This is NOT Ottawa two years ago.

It was a response to a comment that if Detroit did nothing and sat on all their picks and prospects, it would be a failure by Yzerman.

I responded that it would be viewed that way by the same people who were furious that we didn't trade for Karlsson or Hellebuyck, and somebody acted like I shot his first born.

Detroit is my Darkhorse team this year, they might face Washington in the first round and if that the case, I think they have a good chance to make it interesting.
