So are we feeling confident with Laurent as back up after this preseason? I thought he looked great at times but I wouldn’t mind seeing a waiver claim on Pickard and send Brossoit through waivers to the Moose. Get some depth.
Yes I am confident.

Well, he certainly did a 180 from his earlier position on that. He felt that holding the glove hand lower and out in front was better.
Unique Hand Position Helps Hellebuyck Cut Pucks Off - InGoal Magazine
I had many detailed posts about this last summer, about the glove positioning and explaining how I think it should be, sorry too lazy to dig them up but I felt they were good reads. I feel I was right on Helly and where he needed to improve and that he would etc.
I just took the time then to explain my thoughts, too lazy to do it over and over again I guess.

Jets just had a 24 year old 5th round draft pick from the Odessa Jackelopes named as a Vezina finalist. That suggests to me that either Flaherty is not as bad as some have suggested, or many are overestimating the role of the goalie coach.

Just wondering on this post Whileee -- or anyone that knows ?? was Helle playing in the City of Odessa, in Ukraine ?? A 5-th round draft pick to boot !!! Man Chevy and his scouts sure know how to dig them up-WOW -it is impressive. I also think he made the right call on Brossoit and also Morrow. We'll see on these 2 over the next season ??

I believe Helle is an American from Michigan ?? maybe I'm wrong here ?? --how did he go to play in Ukraine at such a young age ?? and overlooked by all the scouts, except Chevy's crew. Anyone know ?? I'm curious to know if he was playing in Odessa, Ukraine when they discovered him ??

Likely most posters know that Odessa is a beautiful ocean city in the very most southern part of Ukraine-- how did he get all the way there ?? anyone know

Edit - I did not know there was a city in Texas called Odessa-- makes sense now.

Honestly, if you can work your way around technology enough to use this site, Im sure you know about Google? Odessa is also a city in Texas. The ECHL is a North American Professional hockey team. It is the farm team for the AHL basically. You would have had all of this info in about 1 minute if you really wanted too

Yes your right--I get a little lazy sometimes, and rely on some of the knowledgeable posters like yourself -'so thanks for that." I did not know there was a City in Texas by the name of Odessa ?? I'm not sure if your being serious, or just joking around with me, so now I'll have to look it up. I'm sure what you've related is true though-"makes sense" I'll now use my "one minute" to confirm.;)

Yes I recall you were very bullish on the stock when it was down. You never waivers on Hellebuyck which I found encouraging.

I've seen two TSN segments on the Jets, and both times, the analysts (one was a goalie, forget his name, and the other was Ray Ferraro) singled out Brossoit as a likely weakness on the Jets. Interesting.

Have not seen any other season previews. Is this a common thought amongst other analysts, or just TSN?

One would conclude the backup to be the Jets weakness until Brossoit proves otherwise. Personally I still have my doubts so I can see why others would as well.

IMO, if the Jets can get 12 wins out of him, it will be a HUGE success.

He has 28 NHL games under his belt with a SV% of eight and change / sub 0.900.

Question mark is being generous. Weakness until proven otherwise is the right categorization for me. Strange how we find ourselves in this situation, but whatever.

I'm less worried. he's could be decent his AHL numbers aren't bad and he was playing for an Oilers team with terrible D. the sample size is way to small to determine what his NHL SV% is....I'm hopeful.

Sounds like you might have gone on that radio station's trip to watch the Super Bowl in Miami. ;)

If Broissot plays in roughly the same style as Helle, does that help the defence in any appreciable way? Does it make things easier for them or is it completely inconsequential? I suppose having a guy who could just stand on his head night after night would be the best option as a backup, but...

Personally, I wouldn't put to much stock in what analysts say, although you have to pay attention, as they may be right. I recall Devin Dubnyk was a disaster for a couple teams in the NHL-bounced around from team to team, and is now considered a top solid Goalie.

All these so called specialists and many on the board here, thought Mason would be a good fit for the Jets, and Helle was going to just be a backup. ( myself included) We all know what happened there --Helle went on to a fantastic year, and Mason fizzled out, and was out 3/4 of the year.

Moral of the story -- don't put to much stock in analysts opinions, as the job of a Goaltender takes a lot of time to become good at. Personally I like Brossoit's style, as he's a standup goaltender, and he's very quick with the reflexes. Also he gets along great with Helle, and I think he'll develop confidence here. He's only 24 yrs old I believe, and I'm quite sure he'll be perfect for what we need. He's already had a great preseason, and looked really good.

So when doea Brossoit see his first action? Do we see him during the home stand (Vancouver)? Or first game back on the road against the Wings?

I'll guess Vancouver........unless Helle craps the bed in a game, then it's whichever game is next :)

I was thinking Arizona on the 20th. An afternoon game so Helly isn't taken out of his routine and nice spacing then to take Detroit on the 26th in the first half of a B2B.
