"Bobby Orr of Sweden." lol.. Sjoberg was a good defenseman, but let's keep it real. That's like saying Thomas Steen was the Wayne Gretzky of Sweden.

One of the most ludicrous comments I've seen in a while. He wasn't just a good defenseman but an elite player in Sweden at the time he joined the Jets. Do you really think that Canadiens GM Sam Pollock would bother to personally fly into Winnipeg and attempt to sign Sjoberg if he was just a 'good' defenseman. Trying to claim that using the Sjoberg and Orr comparison is akin to that of Steen and Gretzky is also a poor attempt at humor. No one in Sweden ever considered that Steen was their version of Gretzky. I wouldn't even rank Steen as the best Swede to have played in Winnipeg. I would give that honor to Anders Hedberg.

Sjoberg was not in Nilsson or Hedbergs league. He was a good player but no superstar. I don't want to see banners raised for slightly above average players.

You obviously are too young to have ever seen Sjoberg play.

No-one from that era would ever make a comment like this.

and this just cemented it.

If you don't know anything about a subject, why offer an opinion?

Sjoberg was a great defenseman, but your nostalgia is blinding you from the truth. If Sjoberg is as great as you claim he is, then why do so few people outside Manitoba know he exists?

No one in Europe knows who's Sjoberg is...only in Manitoba.

Have you heard of New York City? The Rangers know who he is. They hand out the Lars Erik Sjoberg Award to their top rookie...

Do you know what the Golden Puck is? Sjoberg was the top player in his country.

This is Winnipeg Jets history, not who won an award in Sweden. Having said that, I have never heard of anyone aside from Sjoberg on the list you provided (up to the cut-off date of 1977). Stefan Liv, Jonas Gustavsson, Jimmie Ericsson, and Joakim Lindstrom all won the award in the past decade. All of them journeymen NHL players.

If you don't think international hockey, particularly Swedish athletes, has a place in Jets history, you were most certainly the wrong person to start a thread about Jets history.

Please tell those of us that lived thru it how it all went down...

Please tell me you are not one of those kooks who thinks the WHA Jets would have given the late 70s Canadiens a run for their money in a playoff series.

When I was in elementary school I thought just that.

The difference between then and now is I was arguing with people who watched both play.

Apologies, went back and read your post above, nothing to argue about

Sjoberg was a tremendous hockey player. Those commenting otherwise surely never saw him play.

It's not even "those saying otherwise", it's literally the dude who created this thread dedicated to Jets history.

Why start a page celebrating Jets history only to call out the WHA, their defence man of the year in 1978 and the Jets former captain?

And to be doing so a week prior to him being honoured posthumously?

Well, I think it’s a great page and brings back a lot of great memories for me. I would hope this thread would be “celebratory” across the board and we could all cheer on the great hockey players that have come through these parts.

Just a couple final notes on Lars and how he was respected in the broader hockey world. There is a page on the Hockey Hall of Fame website on him that lists some of his accomplishments. Being top d-man at the World Championships, and playing in the Canada Cup have to be pretty special. Also, to have the New York Rangers name an award for him - after their long history - really says something to the person and his character. He was certainly one of my favourite players, he was special.
