Is this something you ask the NHL about or Phoenix? If Phoenix agrees, I don't think the NHL would stand in their way.

Perhaps it's something that would be done after our Atlanta players have finished their careers (nice for these players to have their franchise, Atlanta/Winnipeg, records recognized while they are still active).

This is STILL a topic for you guys?

Seems that someone brings it up every 4-6 months like clockwork. Everyone posts the same arguments they posted last time. Nothing changes. The NHL keeps doing what it does. Rinse and repeat.

On a side note: I like knowing that Patrik Laine now holds the franchise rookie goal scoring record and not someone named Ilya Kovalchuk.

Eventually the new Jets will erase all the franchise records held by Atlanta players. Just a matter of time.

I think the Cleveland Browns/ Baltimore Ravens example illustrates this the best. I know people who don't even realize the current Browns are a relatively new expansion team the way they kept the former Browns records.

In my book, Selanne still holds the record at 76 goals. Who is this Kovalchuk you speak of? ;)

Personally, I like the idea of these current Jets setting new records as opposed to the old team holding pretty much every record. Laine will eventually break all of Kovy's records and I think that's cool.

Great White North eh...
This is like the NHL doing preseason games in Quebec. Salt in the would, I think.

I don't buy this for a minute. I think enough time has gone by where it would be ok. You might be right though if it were Jets AND Calgary, now that I think about it.

I remember being on the Thrashers site when it became known that they were moving and this idea was proposed by the fans and seemed to have a lot of support.

This is surprising? A mother doesn't stop loving her son when he's no longer a sweet little child.

Truth be told that's kind of like asking are the Thrashers still a topic for some of you guys? Just sayin'.

Well that's the thing why I don't get the obsession (I can only speak for myself but I guess others are with me): No, they're not. Sure, sometimes if you want to remember the times and make a joke about something... but else: No, they're not.

People will never ever take the memories you created and times you had with the Jets 1.0 away from you or anyone. They will always be there. Everything else is just numbers in some database.

Weird thought: where do the Thrashers records go if we reclaim Jets 1.0 records?

I'm old and the old Jets are much beloved to me. I find it irritating the records, etc. are held by the Coyotes franchise. But I think much of that is still lingering bitterness. That said, they exist still, I know where they exist and I have all my memories of them still.

But I feel bad for Thrashers fans because there is no home for their records other than Winnipeg and we are the current stewards for those records. I think we should take care of them until as Duke said, current Jets break all those records, whether it's Laine, Scheifele or someone else.

The Thrashers records could be retired. When the Gund brothers, who owned the Cleveland Barons, purchased the Minnesota North Stars in 1978 and merged the 2 teams, the records of the Barons and predecessor California Golden Seals were retired. The Thrashers team standings, like those of the Barons, would remain on the NHL books in the same way as teams like the Montreal Wanderers, Brooklyn Americans, Pittsburgh Pirates, etc. The player stats would remain on the NHL books as well but would not be listed as franchise records for the Winnipeg Jets.

If you are waiting for any current Jets 2.0 to lead the lists ahead of the 1.0 players, you might end up waiting a very long time. More so these days when it's unlikely any player will stay with his current team for a long enough time to break the records. But if we look at the franchise records as defined by the NHL...

Wheeler should be the assist leader shortly. Little should catch Kovalchuk for points lead if he stays with the team after this season.

Franchise records ending for the year 2010-11 belong in Atlanta. It would be insulting to the good people of Georgia to claim Kovalchuk is the franchise leader in scoring for the Jets. It's the same way I do not recognize Doan breaking Hawerchuk's 1.0 Jets records.

I say, let Calgary have any records associated with the Thrashers. After all, they started the trend of moving Atlanta teams to Canada. :D

Yes, but Arizona's should be left there.

Like if Quebec gets a team, they should get their history back too.

But would love 9 and 25 re-retired, have those classic Jets numbers unretired by Arizona such as Hawerchuk.

The Arizona Coyotes had a policy of maintaining the numbers retired when the franchise was the Winnipeg Jets but reversed it after the Phoenix Coyotes were sold and became the Arizona Coyotes. The two numbers previously retired by the Winnipeg Jets - #9 for Bobby Hull and #25 for Thomas Steen - are now being worn by Clayton Keller and Nick Cousins respectively. Number 10 which was retired by the Coyotes previously for Dale Hawerchuk is now worn by Anthony Duclair. I'm happy to see those numbers are no longer officially retired by the Coyotes since none of them actually played in Phoenix or Glendale.

On this day in NHL history.

1981: Doug Smail of the Winnipeg Jets sets an NHL record for the fastest goal from the start of a game when he scores five seconds after the opening faceoff against the St. Louis Blues. Smail’s 15-foot wrist shot beats goaltender Paul Skidmore, who is making his NHL debut. Smail also scores the go-ahead goal in the third period to help the Jets to a 5-4 victory at Winnipeg Arena.

Whoa, didn't realise those numbers weren't properly retired. Not sure how I feel about that, don't care too much though. At least they're honoured.
