I think it depends on matchups. Perfetti and Lambert would be better suited vs thr Avs, but maybe not a bigger heavier team

Conversely, Monahan is 6'2 and Vilardi is 6'3 but their size didn't help them last series

So you'll say "well then we need to get guys who are skilled and big and fast". Basically, Lindros. Those guys don't come around often
I agree they dont come around often just like top pair defensemen. I dont have a problem with any individual player, I just think we do not have the right mix of players to win.

To me it's not the correct mix due to size or offensive talent. It's argyle due to most in the top 6 being one dimensional.

Really only Perfetti played a good two way game for us last year. Vilardi did in LA but wasn't nearly as good for us. Not idea if that was due to playing mostly with Mark and KC.
Both Ville and Salomonsson should help with that. Hopefully Salomonsson turns into that 1RD but not sure when that would be and who the placeholder is in the meantime

It'll be very interesting how chevy handles his UFA dmen.

I have very high hopes for Salomonsson but he's likely a couple years away from that. My guess is he needs one year in the AHL and then atleast another in the bottom 4.

Ville I expect to atleast be a plus puck moving third pair guy. It would be great if he could be a two-way second pairing player.

I dunno about Salomonsson. He just had a great season in SEL, which is a better league than the AHL. I'm assuming he'll start down there, but it wouldn't surprise me if he's more NHL ready than we think

Maybe that's just wishful thinking, tho

We actually have a pretty diverse top 6:

Scheifele 6"3 big top center that his elite at holding up pucks.

Vilardi big skilled player who is elite in tight

KC - Elite finisher with deft hands and agile skating.

Perfetti - Cerebral two way player with strong scoring and playmaking.

Heck move Nino up and you have that size and skill.

Nino Scheifele Ehlers
KC Perfetti Vilardi

There is speed, scoring and size/grit on each line.

Eheles - Chaotic high end transition volume shooter.

Really we could use one gritty power forward to round it out but we have a diverse set of skills and only KC is allergic to contact and going to the tough areas.

Try Iaffalo with Lowry and Appelton. Gives you grit on line 3.

But as mentioned the biggest issue was our I ability to cleanly break the puck out of our end. This lead to a lack of speed and control through the nz. It forced us to dump and chase much more which of course resulted in more lost battles and lack of zone time. Corrado by contrast was able to skate the puck in thus setting up shop in our zone. So to me if we can get better breakouts it will lead to this group looking miles better.

I've always thought the best lines are when you have an a good puck mover, good finisher and a guy that can win battles in front of the net and in the corners. The position they play doesn't really matter but having that kind of mix can make for really solid lines. Sometimes you have a player that can be basically all 3 by themselves like Sid and McDavid and all you really need to give them are decent enough complimentary players to excel.

We have to see where Chibrikov and Lambert fit, if they do next year but both seem to be more of the puck mover type with some finishing skills.

We have a lot of puck movers with finishing skills. We have at least one pure finisher. But the team really lacks those battlers that can play a top 6 role well on a contender.

Yeah.. players need to be either big and fast or skilled and fast to be successful in the playoffs IMHO. Unfortunately, guys like monahan and vilardi are good and slow

Sometimes you don't even need to be particularly fast if you're smart. But I suppose pretty much all good players these days are at least a little quick on their feet.

I'm not sure if SHL really is better than AHL but his performance screams NHL ready. I think it would be wise to not fill the 3RD slot externally this summer. Give the kid a real chance. I expect Schmidt to be around if Salomonsson can't keep up.

He might need some time to develop still. Last thing I want to do with the young guys now that the team is at least somewhat decent is rush them into the NHL because we just have nothing better, But on the flip side last thing we should be doing is keeping them out of the lineup for worse vets.

It might be good for Salomo to get top pairing minutes in the AHL for awhile, do some regular PKing and possibly PP then jump into a bigger roll than be fed 3rd pairing minutes with the Jets.

He's gonna have to blow the doors off camp I think to snag a top 6 spot. But honestly depending on how things go this offseason the bar might be pretty low.

The Jets routinely rank near the top of the league for height/weight. I don't think size on its own is an issue. I think a lack of talent is, especially after JoMo on the backend.
I should expand on my post. They play smaller than they are. I'm basing my opinion on playoff hockey, not regular season hockey. What has me confused is why do they look so overwhelmed in playoffs..... is it a character thing. Coaching perhaps... Our special teams are so static and predictable for NHL.

I agree the talent is not elite especially on d.

It's hard to say. Seems to me they were behind the play all series and just scrambling. Hard to enforce your will on the other team physically when you are a step behind.

It’s all about the PP. jets need to get a top 5 PP next year.

I think there’s roles for some very small quick skaters as power-play specialists.

All i know is i think we need a whole new coaching staff with new ideas and can figure out a PP and a PK . As much as i like Ehlers 4 goals in 36 playoff games isn't remotely good enough and we need to change half of our defense. And all of this still won't do enough to get us over the hump if Helly doesn't give us regular season goaltending in the playoffs.

The RHD on this team has sucked since Buff left and Chevy hasn’t done a damn thing to fix it…lots of wasted assets on unneeded forwards like Monahan and not a single worthwhile attempt to fix the D
Firing Chevy should be the first thing to happen this offseason

Too many average/below average size defense. No one clearing the front of the net. Too many screen goals. The Jets have Hellebuyck he just needs to see the puck.

2023-24 : 1W then 4L
2022-23 : 1W then 4L
2020-21 : 4W then 4L

This ( finishing with 4L ) has become a pattern that needs to change.

Yes, if you're serious about winning, you have to identify what your most glaring leaks are. If the analytics care about the regular season production, certainly they must care even more about the playoffs. Because, what's the point of those analytics?

And if you're truly a fan of the team, you should care about this.

Warning! "Data-dump" Warning!

1 Goal and 4 assists (1 phantom assist in game #3 this year IMO) in 23 games; the losses.

I wouldn't even give him the set of steak knives. He'd be getting the "a loser is a loser" speech. "Nice guy? Go home and play with your kids."

Watching the Boston Leafs series, we have no one that compares to McAvoy. The guy just eliminates offensive chances against AND is good in transition to boot.

Clearly, those types are v. rare and rarely available.

The best hope is you can trade (for example) Kyle Connor for a #2 D to pair with Morrissey. It is too risky trying to sign them as UFA's because 1 - have to overpay to get them to Winnipeg and 2 - they are typically in the twilight years of their careers so committing long term to another older player is unwise (Scheifele and Hellebucyk are already committed to long term)

With luck, maybe Salomonsson is that guy in 2 or 3 seasons.

JMO, and I am not saying to do this because I'm blaming him, because I'm not....

But since he will probably win the Vezina again, put Helly out there just to see what you might get for him. A goalie like Helly can bring you a big return, so see what you can get. Maybe the Jets can get an elite d-man or forward.

But I know Chevy will never do that since he just extended him.
I would do that if the return was right, and sign Bro as our starter.

In order to find success, not just in the regular season, but for an extended playoff run, changes will need to be made.

Maybe it is personnel or philosophy, or both or other....

I did my best to craft a listing of what I believe, and from what I have read - what you believe are the contributing factors to the post season struggles this team keeps experiencing.

You can select two options from the Poll. Would love to see how we all feel about this!

I started it off with the following selections:

Replace both coaches (Bowness and Lauer)
Improved process to integrate youth (mostly our prospects) into the NHL club

Lets just chat/comment/justify selections on this Poll thread. Already a great thread started by @GJF titled "Winnipeg Jets going into the 24/25 season" that I don't want to disrupt....but I love poll threads. I don't know these things, but can a poll like this be added to a current thread, if desired?

People are allowed to change their votes if users want to sway opinions with their comments. I think I can add other options as well if someone presents a great one that I hadn't thought of and added here. (And then all can change current votes to select that one if you so choose)

Special teams......fire somebody, bring in some other strategies
D.....need more ability to transition the puck up the ice (Henola might help). Still a couple D men short, here, overall. Package up Nik, for help here, if required
O.....give the speedy youth a shot, Forward group not quick enough, have some guys who can't find the net if they were sitting in it.
Intangibles.....need couple of total sob's, who just don't care what they have to do to win (when going gets tough)
