Game Thoughts Double Edition
I never posted last week after how frusterated I was. So I will kinda combine last week's into this one. Tale of two stories for sure.
Offence
Zach Collaros made a statement in this one. After a ridiculous number of struggles to push the ball downfield in the Labour Day Classic Collaros made the adjustments needed and rarely pushed the ball downfield in this one. He just took what was open underneath and exposed the Rider D as frauds with it this week. Then once that was down he managed to hit his over the top passes he loves. Complete domination from the word go here in this one. 6 drives for 6 TDS to open the game. The second half was meh but it really didn't matter at that point.
Dru Brown was on point in garbage time. I still think he is one of the most in demand prospects in the CFL, but after the BC performance I think he might need to wait to get a starting opportunity still.
Brady Oliveira is the best RB in the league. No Canadian modifier needed, he is elite. If RB wasn't such a devalued spot he'd be looking at NFL looks. Finds the holes he needs to find and runs with power. They abandoned him completely last week and it showed. They consistently brought him in this game and he took over.
The OL had a completely dominant game. They were moving the Sask DL off the ball every time. They struggled, particularly on the interior last week, but this week it was running over them. I thought Gray still struggled at times, but the rest of the OL was amazing. Zach had the time he needed and Oliveira was never touched behind the LOS, it was all positive.
How about a bounce back game from Schoen. Last week was inarguably his worst performance as a pro. He was atrocious and a large part of why the Bombers struggled so much last week. This week was a completely different story as he soaked up everything sent his way, including 3 TDs. That's how you respond to adversity. Lawler continued to be elite, but had one really bad drop. He felt there was PI on it but I didn't see it. Demski was quiet this week again, but gotta love the ways they used Bailey this week. He has lived on quick hitters, screens, and sweeps which were completely absent last week. They got him involved this week and he was effective.
Defence
Is there much to say here? Even on Labour Day it was a fine performance except maybe in OT.
This week they commited to bringing the heat and they did. Jeffcoat and Jefferson were solid off the edge. Walker and Thomas were probably even better in the interior. They certainly got more pressure this week versus last. They had help though this week moreso than last one.
That help came from the LB corps primarily. Kyrie Wilson had himself a game in this one. Bringing pressure when needed, stepping up in run support when needed. Most importantly his coverage in shutting down the RB was great. But the real player in the LB corps (albeit primarily a DB) was Redha Kramdhi. I've been overtly critical of him at times. He had a massive game today. His run support was great, as usual. But he added some pass rush, including being rewarded with a sack. But I even saw him make some great plays in pass coverage. So good on him he is getting better and better at SLB. He's the only Canadian starting in this position in the CFL and handling himself well. Not bad for a draft pick who was billed as a ST only player despite being drafted in the 2nd round in 2021. Biggie had a solid game in the middle again.
DBs were on point this week of course. They shut down any deep passing game Sask tried to get going. Did they get a bit lucky, like the early drop by Schaffer-Baker? Sure, but most solid DB games have that. I honestly don't even have much to talk about any one particular player, it was overall just solid.
Special Teams
This is where the Bombers really got caved last week. In the Labour Day game the Bombers were always in bad field position due to specials. This week this story does not matter as the Bombers were so dominant on O and D. However, Castillo was perfect again. He's become Mr. Automatic like Medlock was back in the day.
The punt coverage team struggled immensely on Labour Day. Could not contain Alford and left Sask in amazing field position all the time. In this one the first punt of the game happened with 40 seconds left to go in the game.
The kick coverage team struggled as well, but we solid today. Didn't allow Sask to start with short fields consistently. I think they allowed a return or two, but they kicked off alot.
Overall
Onto to Hamilton. Revenge tour season continues.
