Nice to get the win, but the Bombers do not inspire me with confidence.
I would disagree. Makes poor reads and is continuously high with his passes. Watch him and notice how many times his receivers have to go up for the ball and how many suicide passes he throws.Toronto doesn't have a QB weakness. Kelly has been mostly great this season. He has a strong arm - zips the ball right in there for the receiver - and good mobility. He has had very few brain farts from what I have seen. So far, he has been the best QB in the CFL this season and would likely win MOP if it were voted on today.
Excellent as always. Any comments on the OC and DC?Game Thoughts
Bombers are 5-2 despite not playing their best football. It's a testament to the level they expect internally, we as fans have come to expect, and the level they've proven they can play at. The thing is Grey Cup can be lost in July (ie Edmonton) but it can't be won. So while this post is going to come off a little negative some perspective is the team is 5-2, retains the same core that has had them in 3 straight Grey Cups, winning two. Writing them off is foolish at this point, IMO.
Offence
It was an up and down day for the offensive line no doubt. Allowed some pressure and struggled with run blocking early, but as I'll talk about in a minute I'm not sure how much of that was on OL in pass pro. Kolankowski I though was struggled in some instances early and I think we might start to see some Eli at C. Replacing Gray with Dobson didn't change much, but I didn't notice Dobson stick out in either respect. They settled in and by the 4th quarter were opening huge holes for Oliveira. This unit will continue to face questions, but overall a better performance against arguably the Elks biggest strength, which is actually a really solid DL.
The receiving corps showed how dynamic they can be on the field together. Kenny Lawler's ability to make the insane catches is really special. I had almost forgotten how good that guy is. Demski continues to just get better and better. I never would have predicted Demski would be where he is today back when the Bombers signed him ahead of the 2018 season, coming off 3 years in Sask where he amassed just ~800 yards total with 3 TDs in 40 games. 772 yards in 12 games last year, and if he stays healthy he has a legitimate shot at a 1K receiving season this year. Stunning continued development for the 29 year old. Schoen and Bailey each had a couple good moments, but let's hope Schoen is healthy.
The run game was stifled early by that impressive EDM DL early no doubt. Plenty of jeering going in the crowd regarding the run game. But glad the Bombers stuck with it and Oliveira got more confidence as the game wore on. Starting to really hit the holes hard in the 4th quarter and ended up with a solid stat line.
The biggest reason for the early trouble was at the hands of the QB's, IMO. Last year Prukop was one of the league's best at short yardage, but obviously really struggled last night. Stuffed on the first attempt, he then fumbled the 2nd attempt. Bombers need to clean up short yardage in the worst way. Prukop did get in for a TD from nearly the 2, but they need more consistency in those. But my big problems early is with Collaros. He's really not doing his OL any favours. I spent the entire game basically watching the receivers rather than the ball. On the INT early for example he had Wolitarsky WIDE open on the cross 5 yards down the field, with 20 yards of room in front of him. Instead Collaros hung onto the ball, hung onto it, moved around and tried to force a play into Lawler in tight coverage for the INT. And this wasn't an isolated incident either, he had Oliveira in the flats, Woli/Schoen/Bailey on short crossers/slants/stops wide open much of the night, particularly in the first half. But it looked like again and again Collaros was holding the ball for far too long trying to force the deep shots rather than take what he had. Much like Collaros has done 95% of the time in a Bombers uniform in the end he found the deep shots enough that by late the Bombers were comfortably in the lead. But taking what he can and grinding drives early would be really helped if Collaros would get rid of the ball quicker. This would also help alleviate the pressure on the OL. I doubt Collaros is going to change at his age, but I hope he can make some adjustments watching that film.
Defence
I'll start with the best aspect and it was secondary, IMO. Sure Demerio got burned hard on the designed double move where Mitchell went over the top, but outside of that one play he had a real solid game. I think that was almost his only allowed pass of the night. Added a garbage time INT for his efforts. Nichols was his normal self, and the wide side guys were strong again in Daramy-Swaray and Holm. Alexander has seemingly not done alot this year, but when you watch the games live and can see the whole defence you start to realize his value. He is moving guys around like a QB back there at times, helping the whole DB corps play better. The biggest criticism of the DB's from me would be with SLB Redha Kramdhi last night. While he is great in stepping up to help on the run game, he really seemed to be struggling in coverage. He often appeared to be talking to Alexander to understand where he needed to be. He may not have started much but he's a veteran and would have liked to see a better showing. Darby was listed as the backup but didn't play that I saw. Wonder if the message has been sent and they go back to Darby (not that he's been all the great either so far this year). SLB seems to be a troublesome position for the Bombers to fill in recent years.
The DL looked solid. It's a fairly weak EDM OL, so the success was to be expected. Some issues wrapping up Cornelius, particularly in the 1st half, but outside of that a good showing from all 6 of them to be honest. In the interior Cam Lawson is a developing star Canadian, IMO ala Ted Laurent in Hamilton. He's in his 3rd season after being drafted by MTL in 2020, but he's still only 24 years old. Obviously he got the "johnny on the spot" INT which is cool, but he's doing great plugging up the run lanes, and has shown a bit of pass rush in him as well this year. We finally have our eventual Thomas replacement, IMO. Ricky Walker has settled in nicely inside as well. Jeffcoat looks back to his old self finally and Willie is the best defensive player in the CFL, IMO. Bennett in fact I liked his game as well, albeit not one that shows up on the stat sheet.
The LB corps is where most the trouble comes in. I mentioned the issue at SLB during the DB portion, but WLB was not any better. It was being handled by a mix of Les Maruo, Brian Cole, and Jesse Briggs and none of them stood out in a good way. All of struggled to track the QB early, albeit improved later as they were assigned a "blitz spy" position on Cornelius. Maruo struggles early meant more and more Brian Cole, but after Cole's ridiculously stupid roughing the passer penalty it shifted back to Maruo who looked improved late. Briggs was brought in at times to help run D I think, but he doesn't have the range to flow with the play easily, IMO. Hopefully Kyrie gets healthy very soon as we need him. Bighill had his moments including one play where he stood up Elks RB Kevin Brown in the hole and stopped him dead in a vintage Bighill/LB move. But overall wasn't super noticable as they continue to shift him into more and more DB like play.
Special Teams
Not a banner night for Castillo as he missed his first two kicks on the night (a 45 yarder and an XP). But that's gonna happen, and tonight was arguably the best night of the year to hit those misses haha. Only 1 kicker in the league has yet to miss a FG. Marc Liegghio
But it WAS a banner night Jamieson Sheahan. Holy crap does that guy have a massive leg. The length and hang time on some of those punts was beyond impressive. I'm convinced they made the right call on the punter battle now.
The return game was obviously missing Janarion. He's 1 return TD away from setting the Bombers return TD record after just ~3 injury and pandemic shortened seasons (came in halfway through 2019, injured/pandemic shortened year in 2021, missed a couple games last year). You can't replace that guy. Parker did a solid job on PR just getting up field. Clearly doesn't have quite the upside of Grant, but north south running got the job done. I have no idea why Chris Jones was pooch kicking every kickoff? It was only Parker back there (despite the depth chart listing McCrae it was Parker as the KR as well). Oh well it led to a nice return for Johnny Augustine at one point.
Return team did a nice job on containing Sims, who looks to be a solid returner. Even on those long Sheahan punts, guys got down there in a hurry to cover them up, most notable Brian Cole.
Overall
A dissapointing performance against a poor team. But got the job done and now two weeks to rest up for a massive massive battle against the Lions. If the Bombers want to control their own fate in the race for the division win the game on August 3rd is a must win. It's nearly impossible to not play down to the level of your opponent, so let's see how the Bombers fair when faced against BC. I think the Bombers answer the bell.
Disagree. He is able to complete a good percentage of his passes in tight windows. Every quarterback has to have receivers make adjustments to the ball a few times each game.I would disagree. Makes poor reads and is continuously high with his passes. Watch him and notice how many times his receivers have to go up for the ball and how many suicide passes he throws.
His real value comes from his low salary which allows Toronto to build such a good team around him. A lot of his completions are because the receivers 5-10 yards wide open.
Fair enough. I’m not sold on him but we’ll see as the season goes on.Disagree. He is able to complete a good percentage of his passes in tight windows. Every quarterback has to have receivers make adjustments to the ball a few times each game.
My sons have made the observation that the O-Lines across the league seem to be worse this year... I haven't crunched numbers, but sacks seem quite high to start the year (they watch most games, I just watch the Bombers). That may have made the QB's look sketchier to begin the year, but I think sometimes it takes a bit longer for O Lines to gel vs D Lines can create chaos out of the gate? I seem to have heard that somewhere before, anyway. Now watching with a more neutral eye, this Crum guy is doing pretty OK. Kelly, Crum, even that Powell guy in Hamilton looked ok. New blood in CFL at QB is a very good thing.
To be completely fair, the rules was never only 2 QBs on the roster. But if you dressed a 3rd American QB your 3rd QB would have counted towards the Americans on your roster, essentially eliminating an additional American roster spot. So for example for the Bombers dressing Pigrome/Prukop as #3 would mean one losing a spot they are using for a guy like Cole as STer/backup or Parker as STer/KR/backup or Damien Jackson as general every position guy, etc. So not many teams would bother with the 3rd QB when that was in effect.Imagine the mess this year if the CFL still had their ridiculous 'only 2 QBs on the roster' rule?
CFL needed to make an offseason QB development camp happen and nurture that position - the league lives and dies by QBs and we don't have much for heir apparents...
Crum, Fine and Maier all have potential but CFL brass need to find a way to get these guys refined in the offseason - think it could be a great marketing opportunity too
Again, I'd take it a step further and hold a two week QB development camp in the offseason or before preseason... one week of in-house team development and one week of more fan-based QB competition - something to get some hype which of course the CFL seems to run screaming away fromTo be completely fair, the rules was never only 2 QBs on the roster. I do agree it was a very very dumb thing and glad the CFL nixed it and allowed 3 exempt QBs again.
There's guys waiting for their shots still, IMO. This year for the first time in a while I feel like there's a new gen of QBs coming into the CFL starting to get ready to get their chances. Some guys are getting their chances and showing well like Kelly and Crum. Mason Fine is going to get a long look in Sask this year. Tyrie Adams has shown flashes of potential before his injury this year and last year with guys like Caleb Evans, Dru Brown, Taylor Powell, Tre Ford, even Tyrell Pigrome have all shown that they might have some upside as well. There many be a star or two in that mix, and maybe another couple decent starters, even if most bust. It seems like finally their might be a next gen for CFL QBs. I'm encouraged, but again having 3 on the roster as you say is a big help.
I wholeheartedly agree. That should be of some concern to you.Calk me crazy - and while I do get the point, but the whole notion of counting the number of Americans/Canadians on the team is weird.
Let the best make the teams.
Every sports league in the world uses import limits except NHL, NBA, MLB, and NFL. That includes things like all soccer leagues, all baseball leagues outside of MLB, all hockey leagues outside of NHL, etc. It's in fact the NFLs and NHL that don't use it are the exception, not the rule.Calk me crazy - and while I do get the point, but the whole notion of counting the number of Americans/Canadians on the team is weird.
