Prospect Info: Wings Prospect Discussion, Part II

I have a hard time seeing him without a contract. I think his offensive IQ will limit how high he plays up the lineup, but he has good physical tools and skates well. I think he is the polar opposite of Mazur in a lot of ways oddly.

He has a pro future for sure and turns 22 in October, so no reason not to get started. He was a pretty high pick, is physically ready and does a lot things you'd think the Wings should like, so seems likely he'll be signed. You just never know how the prospect feels about things or what else is going on his life. I agree he's quite different than Mazur and about the offensive IQ limits, but I've seen a couple of James' better games where he gives me Blake Coleman vibes. Probably wishful thinking.

Nice to see positive things being said about him. His stats seem to be getting better. He’s a great PK which we really need help with

Always been somewhat optimistic about James despite not putting up a lot of points in first two seasons, mostly because of his skating ability and work rate. Here's a snippet from the Grand Forks Herald game story, quoting coach Brad Berry:

"I want to follow up and answer the question you asked Dylan James on what gave him success or what he did tonight to give him two goals and two assists," Berry said. "Play North Dakota hockey. We need more guys to do that. Dylan James goes out and wins every puck race, wins every puck battle and retrieves a puck. When you have your whole team doing that, you're going to have success."

James' stat line now is 10-8-18 in 26GP, respectable thanks to the big game but nothing special for a third-year player and high second-round pick. UND is having a tough season by its standards, but James has just three fewer points than the leading scorer and is the top goal-scorer at ES and overall despite zero PP goals. I hope he gets signed after the season.
I didnt realise his team was like that offensively. 3 points off the team lead isnt actually horrible, would be nice to see morepoints but I dont think hes a guy who is gonna be held out of the league becausehe doesnt score enough

We are in last place in the PK killing department. Maybe signing James should be a priority

James is known to be good on PK and has 2 SHG. As a team though UND is second worst in NCHC. Wings have been only a little better on PK under Todd and now the only team below 70 per cent (69.7). Their PK was decent last season so it's not so much lack of right players IMO as execution and not great PK goaltending.

I just wouldn't say getting Raymond or Kasper is the same as getting Lidstrom + Fedorov + Konstantinov + Sillinger + Drake, so I would leave some room above their grades for a more honest discussion

We are having an honest discussion. The 89 draft was legendary, and not to be repeated. A cold war, defections, Barely any scouting in Sweden, a legend not making the national team, etc. IF that is your benchmark for 2019 through current, yeah, give every team a F and move on. Management, technology and geo-global relationships have changed since then. It would be better to show who did better than the Wings in these draft years, especially with lower picks. < giving you a direction, IF your goal is the discussion. Otherwise, sure the 89 draft was better.

Might be strange but I'd love to see Mazur and Dylan James kill penalties together. The speed and tenacity give me a feeling they can create a lot of turnovers and spring a lot of offense the other way.

Anyways James is Helm with Helm hands.

Skellefteå lost 1-5 to Frölunda today. MBN was on the 4th line, TOI 10:58, 2 hits, 0 on everything else including SOG. I bet he's not happy, get him out of there...
He’s averaging like 15 min a night for the season. I doubt he would be playing more in GR, if that’s what you’re suggesting

Feel free to tell us where he should go and why it would be better.

He should go where Yzerman wanted him to go in the first place, he fits NA hockey much better imo.

When he's on the 4th line over there with 3/4 of the season done you know something is wrong because he's a better player. I know he's frustrated because he gets linemates who don't set him up for a shot. We know his shot is a true weapon. Local reporters said that's a mistake by Skellefteå, they don't know what they have in him.

I doubt he stays with Skellefteå next season, but if he doesn't feel ready for NA he may go to another SHL team. I heard Färjestad could be interested, they have a long tradition of signing Norwegian players with success. It's also where his buddy Stian Solberg plays, who's another 1st round pick.

Definitely an NA hockey style of player. He's the guy who says "I'm going to take away your space and make it mine, then I'll put the puck in your net". The less ice this wrecking ball player has to do his job, the better

AHL also has better small area distributors and with Danielson/Lombardi down the middle, MBN would have plenty of opportunity to begin developing his strengths. Especially on a PP that's kind of putrid to watch currently

He would be greatly welcomed in GR this season, especially with so much injury time lost from important guys like Mazur and Lombardi

It's not to say going to SHL was a mistake as I was fine with him going there. It does suck when the team has come crashing down to earth after a stellar championship run last year. MBN didn't get to reap those rewards

I hope him and ASP come right over for the GR playoff run once AIK is eliminated

He might be a better fit for NA hockey. I am not sold that he would be getting more minutes in the AHL and so I am not sure developmentally it would be that different compared to his situation now.

I think as long as he is either on a different SHL team next year or Grand Rapids, he'll be fine.

Facing a little adversity in your +1 isn't the end of the world, Raymond turned out just fine.

Are you guys watching MBN playing or it's just points problem.
I think Lalonde complain about his skating, but what is the problem

Latest stock watch, Feb 5, by Elite Prospects for players in the SHL.
MBN is in the "Stock Steady" category:

Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, RW, Skellefteå AIK (Detroit Red Wings)

Michael Brandsegg-Nygård’s SHL season has yet to take off. He isn’t putting up big numbers, and his defensive game hasn’t been as dominant as it was last season. He plays responsibly in his own zone, consistently taking smart routes and shutting down passing lanes, even if he isn’t generating many turnovers. When forechecking, he pressures opposing defencemen effectively, often limiting their breakout options.

Offensively, he isn’t driving play much, and his shot remains an underused weapon in Skellefteå’s system. He averages fewer than two shots on goal per game. Despite playing on the top power-play unit, he has only one power-play goal and three power-play points in total. His bumper role is often underutilized, as he remains covered while his teammates create plays. While his skills may be underused at the moment, his potential remains unchanged. He projects as an NHL player with smart forechecking habits and goal-scoring ability in a top-nine role.

I think once the SHL playoffs are over, if healthy, similar to Kasper a couple of years ago (just don't break their knee caps) both ASP and MBN should come over to get some games in and join one of the playoff races here to continue their development path.

Even a short run at the NA game this year may help them prepare for NHL careers.

I don't expect them to go deep in the playoffs in SHL, so yes , hope both GR and Wings in the playoffs. Obvious choice for ASP and MBN to play for GR. After break NHL better teams will go for final push, means it will be more harder for Wings to make playoffs, but if they do it will be more sense to keep players with playoff experience rather than newcomers

The Wings IMO looked at MBN in much the same way they looked at Seider. A physically developed player with NA traits whose development would be best served by getting accustomed to NA ice and the differences in how the game is played. It wasn't a question of how much ice time he would get, it was that the ice-time would be in games more closely related to NHL games. There was nothing wrong either with playing in the SHL, but unexpected issues ini Skelleftea with coaching and a bad start have complicated the process for MBN. Struggling in a D+1 is not the end of the world, as we've seen with Kasper having to struggle and adapt to a higher level of play is arguably more useful for development than having it easy vs. lesser competition.

I've only seen MBN play a couple games and of course highlight packages that are posted, comments from people who've seen him play a lot. My impression is that he is overanxious to put up numbers and letting it get to him that he isn't. Sometimes young players, like fans, are more focused on immediate results rather than the process that will eventually produce the results they want. That was one of Zadina's issues. It would be a good idea for him to join GR when Skelleftea's season is over and be part of what has been, unlike Skelleftea, a very good season. But where he plays is not nearly so important as his mindset and ability to learn and trust the process that people smarter than him lay out.

Guys from Finland say something good about Kiiskennen. Leading his team in points, point per game, it's 300% improvement from last season.
Well there was a news story about him yesterday.

19-year-old hockey player amazes: "He was a completely unknown player" Jesse Kiiskinen, who shone on the U20 World Championship silver team, is now shining in the League.

HPK's 19-year-old winger is having a fantastic breakthrough season. The second-highest goal scorer at the WJC is at a staggering point-per-game pace in the Liiga. Since the WJC, he has been the most effective player in the entire League. Jesse Kiiskinen has scored 4+9=13 points in 9 games since the WJC, which is the most in the entire League.
Young forward Jesse Kiiskinen and the entire HPK team have created a real winter sensation, seemingly under the radar. When Maso Lehtonen was fired at the end of September, the club, which had only collected two points from five matches, was in the league's jumbo position.

New head coach Mikko Manner lifted the team seven places higher, to ninth, by the February international break.A big thank you for the awesome performance also goes to Kiiskinen, who has scored 12+23=35 in 35 matches he has played.

The point per game pace is insane for a 19-year-old player, and he is at the top of HPK's internal scoreboard. With a full number of matches (47) and the same pace, he would share sixth place in the league's points table with Ilves star Matias Mäntykivi.

As the season progresses, Kiiskinen's performance has continued to improve. In the last ten games, he has scored a whopping 5+10=15 points.

– He has basic skills and virtuosity, Manner praises.

– He has the ability and desire to score goals. Yet he is also a good team player and a self-sacrificing fighter, the coach shares his gratitude for the goal scorer's attitude.

Young lion
Jesse Kiiskinen was the second-best scorer at the U20 World Championship with six goals. Kiiskinen was already on fire at the turn of the year's U20 World Championship.

He was Finland's top scorer with 6+1=7 and helped lead the team to a silver medal at the World Championship. Despite his young age, he has also won silver twice in the Liiga. Kiiskinen made his debut in the League with his youth club Pelicans in the 2022–23 season, but then, as well as a year later, he was left on the bench in the team that twice advanced to the finals.

Last season, Kiiskinen scored 4+6=10 in 38 games, but did not play in the regular season after January. He had difficulty fitting into the Pelicans' lineup, and in the playoffs he only played in a small rotation role. The player's development from that position to this moment has been, so to speak, blood-curdling.

– He was a completely unknown player to me when I came here on the moving train. He has been a positive revelation in every way, Manner says of the Lahti player who moved to Hämeenlinna last summer on a two-year contract.
– He made a move in his career that left the familiar circles at home and with his friends to grow as a player and a person. He has seized that opportunity and has been able to cope with it just fine.

– The U20 Worlds was a pretty solid performance, and even after that he has been able to shoulder the responsibility well, even though he has been sick a bit. Now we are trying to help Jesse so that he can cope with the whole season, especially mentally.

Development targets
The Nashville Predators selected Kiiskinen in the third round of the 2023 NHL Draft. Last summer, the Predators traded his player rights to the Detroit Red Wings. When it comes to NHL games, Manner sees that the talented player still has room for improvement.

– There is still a lot to do. His skating needs to improve and his physique needs to take more steps. If he wants to make a difference there, then he needs to skate even harder, Manner knows.

– It is also interesting what happens on the mental side when the famous “second season” comes and expectations grow for himself and those around him. Can he continue this everyday life and have a good day with quality and not rush in his own thoughts towards the next battles when the previous ones are still unfinished, the coach wonders.

– The development stories there are like those of all other young men in general. And then, when at some point there are setbacks

– role, playing time or some other adversity – how can you overcome them? After these experiences, an NHL player can emerge at some point.

– Already at this moment, he is a top player for us. Of course, we are trying to help Jesse, who has done the most work himself, continue the journey piece by piece. Let's hope that one day he will be cool in the Detroit lineup.

What route?
Both Manner and Kiiskinen's contracts with HPK will continue after the season, but the latter may move to North America for the next season.

– You never know. Those transfers are case-specific, and you can't speculate too much on them as a coach, Manner says.

– It depends on the type and profile of the player, as well as how quickly you break through in North America. I've always been of the opinion that it's worth turning those stones over here first, becoming a player for the men's national team and even going to the World Championships. After that, you'll have a better chance of breaking into the NHL.
– For some players, the AHL route is suitable and for some it is not. We'll see what Jesse's route will be. Hopefully the young man will reach his potential and get to experience those dreams.

One piece at a time
Mikko Manner's HPK is second in the 10-match :lost in translation:..... As the Finland assistant coach, he is on the national team's journey during the 4 Nations tournament.

Manner led Kärpät to the championship in his first season as head coach in the 2017–18 League. When he took the helm of HPK, the team, which had only beaten SaiPa last season, was in exactly the position it was generally predicted to be in during the season. A prediction made by ten different reporters put the Club in a very bad position, sixteenth. That would mean first a playout, then possibly league qualification and, in the worst case, even relegation to the Mestis. HPK's squad, which was struggling with its finances, was estimated to have weakened further. Manner saw things differently, and now the team is in the middle class above Kärpät.
– We had Jesse's-style, open-minded and still somewhat unknown talents here, as well as a few really good ones who have already made a name for themselves in the League but hadn't necessarily made it to the big headlines yet.

– The team was good in terms of age and role distribution. It was also in good shape so that there was enough speed, and in the Finnish Championship many teams are surprisingly even, says Manner.

– Little by little, we have improved our teamwork and increased our self-confidence. That has led to successes, and most recently, these young men have come back and brought a little extra. No fewer than four HPK players returned from the WJC with silver medals; Kiiskinen, his teammate Roope Vesterinen, defender Kalle Kangas and goalkeeper Kim Saarinen.

– Recently, Saarinen has been a guarantee of victories, Manner says.

Series position
If HPK had played with Manner's average points from the start of the season (1.57), it would be in eighth place, with triple champion Tappara (1.52) also behind.

This says a lot – about both teams. HPK holds a playoff spot with a six-point margin over JYP, who are in 13th place. However, the experienced coach is not greedy.

– The table is tight and the toughest matches are ahead, Manner reminds us.

– The only thing I look at in the league table is the second-highest place, he says of the playout spot, which is currently occupied by the Pelicans, who have collected 13 points less.

– Only when that place is a mathematical impossibility do I look up. The goal is to secure a place in the league and win as many games as possible.

Detroits amateur scouting is absolutely putting in work. I criticized them back about 2021 because I didnt see the vision that I see now. They have drafted some amazing defenseman and they are really starting to hit on late round picks imo (at least with how these late rounders are projecting). Identifying kiiskinen and trading for him seems to be an absolute steal, just don’t look at what we did with the 2nd round pick we acquired lol.

SHL today: Skellefteå vs Örebro, 3-2. Finally a win. MBN is still on the 4th line, TOI 11:58, 3 SOG. But he's been very physical lately, 4 hits in this game including a huge one. He even dropped the gloves but the officials stopped it. I think this is a sign of frustration for him, wish he was on a better team.
