It’s just because he would cost so much.

He’s fantastic but damn man. Larkin isn’t no McDavid.
No, that's a fine reaction. There is no way to trade for Drai and come out with a better roster in the near future. Unless Edmonton inexplicably decides to blow it up completely and they just want true futures. Too many needed pieces would have to move out. Pieces that we don't have replacements for any time soon and it's not like Drai is 22. He's older than Larkin and people are already getting twitchy that Larkin will be too old by the time the rest of the roster has caught up.

It's a trade which will never happen.

Just like:
- Jonathan Hubeardeau will never be traded!
- Matthew Tkachuk will never be traded!
- Jack Eichel will never be traded!
- Taylor Hall will never be traded!
- Mark Stone will never be traded!
- Erik Karlsson will never be traded!
etc.
None of those guys are on Draisatl’s level.

What is Draisaitl's level without McDavid feeding him?

It seems like his production will drop almost 50% without McJesus.

That McDavid effect for pure scoring is huge. Like Zach Hyman had 70 total goals at this season (regular season + playoffs). Same double effect there. Hyman is a 30-35 goal scorer, but with McDavid he is potting double amounts.

It doesn't really matter if Edmonton has the Cap space to sign him or if it would be stupid for them to trade Drai. If he wants to go, he's gone in FA. He'll get the same or more money from his new team. He'll be Batman instead of Robin, creatiing his own legacy, one that now includes many folks still wondering how good he really is. If he's not traded -- and he probably won't be unless it's to a team he wants to sign with long-term -- he'll have another excellent chance to win a SC before he starts Chapter Two of his career.

Edmonton's choice is simple if Draisaitl's intent is to move on to Chapter Two.. Do we maximize our chances of winning a Cup in 2025, or do we get the best possible package for him this summer? Unless it's a crazy good offer, they'd be nuts IMO to not keep him and take their shot, and if he still wants to walk, c'est la vie. Gives them a year to work on him, keeps sending McDavid the message they are doing their best to win now. And Detroit would be nuts to offer so much that it might make them change their minds. The situation for all teams is basically overpay now by so much it hurts, or get in line next summer.

Why is this even being discussed? It flat out won’t happen.
You talk about draft picks that likely aren't going to happen, why this different?

Wow, c'mon tell me you've never watch these guys much without saying it out loud.

Might not be a 100-point player but he's not dropping down to a 50-point guy playing on our top line and PP.

This is my fear with Drai. I still think he'll be an excellent player without McDavid but at 13 mil a season he needs to be in that 100-110 point range and I fear that without McDavid he won't be. Whomever signs him long term will be paying him for his production with McDavid without any guarantee that he'll be able to hit those numbers consistently.

To be clear I don't think we are looking at a 50% drop off but I do fear that we'd have to pay him for those 110-120 pt seasons and he might be more in the 90-100 pt range. In the cap world you really need people to at least equal their cap hit if not exceed it if you want to be competitive.

Because those Wings draft picks are within the realm of the possible.

Drai to Detroit is not.
It's in the realm at least, especially if Oilers really want to move him. Just unlikely. Like lotto odds unlikely.

If it seems like a waste of time talking about Draisaitl or any other trade rumor then talking, then watching guys that'll never be on this team is definitely more of a waste.

Seems weird to tell people to quit talking about something vs just ignoring it yourself.

Imo, Red Wings cap with Draisaitl won't work at all at this season. But 2025-26 we have huge space for a big addition.
