It's always difficult for a new coach to implement his hockey style to a team during the season. But in this case, Lalonde was overdue. I guess he's lost the locker room, it's time for a fresh start.

Maybe there will be some roster moves soon too. Could see them sending down Kasper to improve his scoring output on an AHL-Top-line.

I don't care about the record this season anymore, it's just about seeing improvement on the ice. Wings have been playing some bad hockey this season so far. It seems like McLellan is a "puck-posession" Coach which sounds good - Lalonde has played a "dump & chase" style of hockey which cleary doesn't fit to this team.

On the other hand I'm not sure if this team is suited for a puck posession game style. Defensemen have an important role when it comes to a posession game. Mo Seider can do that, I'm sure. But aside from him? There are gonna be some ugly turnovers.

Yes but they are similar styles. The left wing lock was what Bowman implemented with the wings in the 90's if I recall correctly. The devils used the trap. Either way it seems that was a big part of why Yzerman would want McLellan since he employs the system the wings used to win cups back in the day. Maybe with the team Steve is assembling McLellan can finally break through and win a cup.

*Puts down the pipe*

Left wing lock = invented by the Czechoslovaks to counter the soviets and uses two forwards to forecheck and the LW plays zone defense with the two D's.

The trap = Uses the neutral zone to smother the attack and was based on the Swedish system of 1-3-1 used by Tommy Sandlin. The Swedish 1-3-1 developed into 1-2-2 also called "Torpedo system"

The Wings did not use 1-3-1 back in the day.

Saw this on reddit about a dude that lost his job the day after Christmas, I replied "Good luck Derek!" but no one caught on. I thought it was funny.

Glad to see that Boughner also got fired, as I have had a suspicion that him and Lalonde were the reason why Mo has been playing way more conservatively since his rookie season.

Not super excited that McLellan plays a 1-3-1 system, and hope the not playing youngsters is not a real thing as we are supposed to be getting younger. That said, sounds like he likes playing the top players more, so Mo and Ed should see plenty of ice and hopefully less of Petry. Hoping to see more of the rookie style from Mo.

1-3-1 is also s system how Tampa Bay played on their Cup years... with Lalonde there.

1 = RW forechecker.

3 in the middle are LW - C - RD (weak RhD defenceman)

1 = One strong LhD defender behind (Hedman, McDonagh or Sergachev). Their Best 3 defencemen were all split on their own pairs to have a quality "quarterback" always there.

I don't how that could work with us, when Seider is the best as RhD and Edvinsson the send best as LhD.

Idk what type of "system" he'll bring in. I've actually made fun of it because... well he's not implementing anything within a couple days. lol. Try after all-star break.

Either way, I'm hoping more of a Soviet style hockey will be played with cycling/puck possession. I hate dump/chase hockey. Defensively, a trap system might be our best, but that'll get you caught out of position at times now with no Red Lines.

We'll see how the first 10 games goes, anything better than 5-5 and I'm still in.

There is no all star break this year. The 4 nations tourney is taking that spot. So it will actually be a longer break. However I actually don't think it will take that long to get the players to buy into McClellan's system tbh, since they seem so fed up with newseys. However getting all the execution and timing and nuance of it just right will take a bit but I'm not too worried.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but that was a system he used in LA but hasnt used everywhere he goes. The fact he can adjust based on the layers he has at his disposal is nice compared to Lalonde
If a coach is so dogmatic that he can only run one system regardless of available talent, you have a bad coach.

I applaud the move. Things had clearly gone sideways beyond the point of no return. I am not, however, expecting a massive change (apart from a five game bump). This is good for those of us who still want to bottom out this season.

It is difficult to follow the answers when the questions can hardly be understood due to the poor sound quality. Is this sound quality standard?

Literally all I've wanted this season is to hear from Steve. I feel a lot better knowing what his expectations are and were with the team. I mean, it should've been obvious with the Kane and Tank signings that it's playoffs or bust time, but it feels good to hear it from the horses mouth.

Also like how he talked positives (giving Ed such a big role) and negatives (giving Ras/JV smaller roles) of Lalonde this season.

Maybe I'm a glimmery eyed hopeful, but I expect McLellan to at least put us back in the hunt. Like Steve said, we go on a 3 game streak, we're right back in the mix.

The three game win streak is faulty logic and concerns me to be honest. There are six teams between us and the second WC. Winning three in a row isn’t doing much when you have to pass by so many teams.

This team needs 61 points in its final 48 games to match last year. To be a WC team Detroit probably needs 65 or so points in the final 48 games. There is nothing about this roster that makes me think such a heater is even remotely possible.

I'm really happy to see this.

The Blues game on Monday had to be the final straw. Had to. Those guys played like they were trying to get Lalonde fired. When you see that happen, it's time to change horsemen to bring in the apocalypse.

Dumping Boughner is a bonus, because even I could score on that PK.

Welcome back to Motown, McLellan!
