Trap is 1-2-2. You had usually a center as F1 to forecheck in order to close the center ice and wings taking away the boards. No three zone passes as trap was effective during red line rule timeframe

Yes but they are similar styles. The left wing lock was what Bowman implemented with the wings in the 90's if I recall correctly. The devils used the trap. Either way it seems that was a big part of why Yzerman would want McLellan since he employs the system the wings used to win cups back in the day. Maybe with the team Steve is assembling McLellan can finally break through and win a cup.

Glad to see that Boughner also got fired, as I have had a suspicion that him and Lalonde were the reason why Mo has been playing way more conservatively since his rookie season.

Not super excited that McLellan plays a 1-3-1 system, and hope the not playing youngsters is not a real thing as we are supposed to be getting younger. That said, sounds like he likes playing the top players more, so Mo and Ed should see plenty of ice and hopefully less of Petry. Hoping to see more of the rookie style from Mo.

Agree 100%

Or the trap
He plays a system far more in line with Bowman’s left wing lock than the trap they ran in Jersey in my opinion, he always used the closer Bowman tendencies in terms of forecheck the corner defensive spring gate maneuver defensively.

For more, sorry left that short, Jersey plays a passive 1-3-1 that sits back. Bowman's left wing lock use the center and right wing in a sweeping forcheck with the left wing sagging and the right D stepping forward. Jersey laid back they were not active on the forecheck, they used a blanket three but sat back with a far more defensive posture in my opinion.

I wanted a Top 5 pick to finalize the core since the season was over anyway

I wonder if Stevie has any trades coming in the next few days following the roster unfreezing

What if I told you the 1-3-1 he plays used to be called the left wing lock?

Yes, defensively we played that style, but offensively we did not. We were a full on puck possession team then, which we aren't now and not even close to, so the 1-3-1 in this scenario is just a boring style. If we were good enough to play like that, that would be fine, but we have very little skill.

Or the trap

We never played the trap or anything close to it. Trap is give the puck to the other team, clog up the neutral zone with all 5 and then take advantage of mistakes.

When did i say he should get an interim deal? Explain yourself.

One of your comments you said multi-level deal ffs or something to that effect.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but that was a system he used in LA but hasnt used everywhere he goes. The fact he can adjust based on the layers he has at his disposal is nice compared to Lalonde

He's also still being paid by LA this year and has the highest salary of all the NHL Coaches which is a joke.

so I wasn't aware of this and this is just my brain connecting dots into wild speculation that even I don't have much actual belief in but this gave me a thought

if he's still getting paid by LA that probably substantially decreases the cost of hiring him with the whole offsetting salaries thing and I can't help but think of the rumors of Illitch not wanting to get rid of Lalonde because he didn't want to pay for the buyout

it makes me wonder if part of why Yzerman picked him specifically is the lower cost combined with how experienced McLellan is helping sell Illitch on getting rid of Lalonde

(i'll probably regret ever bringing this up in a couple years if he does poorly when I see people treating it as if it's a confirmed fact to defend Yzerman won't I?)

I never once said we played the trap though.

Pretty sure they were one of the top teams every year and won the presidents trophy. Alot of hockey guys took them as cup winners on prediction shows for a reason

They just never lived up to expectations. We were the san jose sharks for years until we finally won the cup in 97

St Louis Blues won the presidents trophy one year and were one of the top teams as well.

Detroit was not the San Jose Sharks until 97. BECAUSE the Wings overcame.

That's what I said we were the sharks till we won the cup in 97. Mclellan couldnt help get the sharks over the hump with a better team than what we have by a mile

Don Sweeney has fired 3 and is still the GM.
Ya yzerman will let go of mclellan within 24 months and still be here. Unless Most our picks end up being trash

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

This beats having a SNES under the Christmas tree when I was 10.

Legit thrilled that this happened, i'm eager to see this team under a new system, new coaching, and hopefully the team starts scoring goals.

On Lalonde: It was about time. Things were not working.

On McLellan: He's an established coach with some NHL success, hopefully he can implement a structure and identity for the team and replicate some of that success here. I think we can reasonably expect at least a moderate improvement in the team. But a new head coach is a major change to an organization, who knows this could potentially be a big change for the positive.

Side thought: I'm glad it wasn't Quenneville.

No, it wasnt. Left wing lock, the trap, 1-3-1 are sorta related to each other but they are not the same. Left wing lock uses two forecheckers, the center and the right wing while the LW and Ds plays zone defense together.

1-3-1 is obviously not that.
