Yes, you always have a choice. Even if the Avs roster wasn't amazing, there is zero justification for playing your top guys as much as he did. No precedent for it whatsoever in history and having any form of success.

I mean he did what he had to do for the Avs to win games. Remember we had Georgiev, million injuries, and at one point we were actually battling to stay in a playoff spot. We were a wildcard team for a while

Girard is a good defenceman everywhere on the ice except in front of the net. Loses so many battles that result in goals. It ain't his fault, but he needs to really use his skill stick defensively instead of trying to out-muscle bodies by tying them up instead. It just doesn't work.
