Windsor Spitfires 2024 - 25 Season Thread, Part V

This is not about ego...the team AND the community would not let it happen

So, is this a "they're not letting George go because he's incredibly valuable to the team and community" thing, in the Michael DiPietro sense.... or..... a "The community doesn't like what Walters did and trading anyone to Windsor would leave a sour taste between the organization and community" thing? I'm just trying to clarify.

I would say 40/60

IMO if Windsor has the best package then you trade him to Windsor.

Otherwise you’re taking a loss on your biggest asset. It’s a businsss first and if a couple fans don’t like it that shouldn’t mean jack to the GM. Fans will critique every move.

You can go out and trade a 4th liner for Wayne Gretzky and fans will still say “oh but we loved little Jimmy he was a fan favourite” reality is you take the best deal on the table and be done with it.

That's fair.

It's not some random player, though. George is likely a big part of that rather small community and I can see why fans would be upset. There's the argument that GMs shouldn't dictate their moves based on fans but this seems like a situation where, if you're not blown away by an offer, why make the move?

Mikey was traded in a rebuild year. Better to move a valued player for assets rather than to hang onto a player only out of spite towards another team. It's fair to the player as well as the fans

Owen Sound is about 1/10th the size of Windsor, population wise. Windsor is passionate about hockey but OS brings it to a new level. Didn't they raise $1M or something, years ago, to renovate the arena so the team would stick around?

You obviously don't know the player or the fan base
Honestly, Walters was canned by the Attack. It's not like he left to go to the Spits. If i was Bowler I wouldn't spend the assets anyway to grab George. The fans in Owen are terrific fans. No doubt. But as fans you'd think a deal that helps the team long term would superseed the bad taste that Walters left.

Yes. They came to play. Good for the OHL. Hoping winning has London detune a year or two for a rebuild and the Spits can go and win #4.

I forget who said it recently (TV or online) - it's not a matter of IF London will compete next season, but how. They're losing a lot of talent this summer yet, somehow, they'll get at least home ice.

Yep, but it is how you finish just like the Knights lost to Medicine Hat in the rounds robin and pulled it together tonight.
Knights earned their way into the tournament.

Host winning should always have an asterisk but whatever 6 Memorial Cups for two good teams.

So Evola is gone. This is a way bigger problem than many will know. Huge hole to fill in the front office. He carries more credibility than anyone else in there!!
Ya Frank was/is the main reason the Spits drafted well. Very well respected by the entire Spits organization. Unfortunately for the Spits he has moved up and rightfully so.
Maybe Spits will benefit around trade deadline,? lol.
Hunters lose their one-sided trades with the ice dogs now.
