Windsor Spitfires 2024 - 25 Season Thread, Part V

If Protas was NHL/OHL next year, than I’d agree 100% he could be back. Unfortunately for Windsor, he is NHL/AHL/OHL, and after proving he is too good for the OHL this year and there’s nothing left for him here I don’t think it’s worth discussing whether he’ll be back or not. NHL teams wish they had this option for their CHL prospects that light up their leagues in their 18 year old season, returning them for their 19 year old season is not ideal as they go back and feel they don’t belong there and coast to a degree. The Capitals get that chance with Protas and you better believe they’ll take it.

Just accept it, we have seen Protas play his last game in Windsor.
All true except there have been occasions that a player is returned not to learn how to score but improve in a leadership role and winning a championship. If Spits were going into a rebuild or slight chance of winning, there would be 0 chance, but there is a sliver of a chance he's placed back to the OHL for that type of experience. The AHL is not going to groom him, he's NHL ready now offensively but a NHL role on a 3rd/4th line limited minutes won't teach him anything. That may not be until late season. It's happened before.

im not a rich man by any means but i own my home outright and have some other cash for when i need it.

i would confidently put every penny that we never see potras in windsor except when he crosses the boarder to play ahl games next year.

No but playing with one of the best junior players in Andrew Cristall who will be in the AHL next year is probably a better idea than anything else.

Yep solar panel fire. Mostly contained on roof away from big rink. Appears to be very little internal damage.
Protus, maybe im to hopeful but i think his speed and D coverage would benefit to another year here. A team looking to challenge might tip the scales.

Guess we will c.
I believe he's back though.
Not a chance Protas is back. When you put up over 2PPG in the regular season and playoffs, he has nothing left to learn in the OHL.

He dominated the OHL, time to go Pro. Washington will put him in Hershey next year. It’s not like the Easton Cowan situation where it was NHL or OHL. It’s NHL, AHL or OHL.

You are probably correct and it is more wishful thinking from the Spits fans to get him back.
I will leave it a 1% chance he comes back. He would have to really falter in the AHL and the Spits will have to be competitive enough that it is worth sending him back. I don't see there is much that he will even fall into the first category. 99% he won't be back.

I don't expect Protas back, but it could come down to an administrative and depth decision. When does Washington want his contract to start (and when do they want it to end). That could have salary cap implications 3 years from now. Will he be taking playing time from another promising prospect in Hershey? These are things that none of us Know.

Based on pure talent, he is gone.

I agree, it is based more on the contract slide. The NHL is a much different animal , much bigger , faster, stronger players . No need to rush an elite prospect into it. The Wings are big on that. They take their time with their young talent. Having said that from what i seen, this guy could be ready to take the next step.

His contract will already slide since he didn't play 10 games this year. I think this discussion is more along the lines of thinking with your heart and not your head. He played one year of USHL and put up 2ppg this year.

Agreed. This talk of improving foot speed n D awareness can be accomplished with more/better resources at an AHL level than Jr. Not just in this example but many.
If it's to learn an offensive role, build confidence, dominate peers, sure I got time for that chat. But he obviously has skill, confidence and a good offensive IQ. Move up and develop quicker with far more resources.

Not sure I'd use the wings development model from 20 yrs ago as a standard when they've really been a poor org results wise for a decade or more .

His offense is not in question, it's more whether can he develop better defensive play some physical presence and maybe leadership. Those areas he could use development and is required in todays game. If he was brought in on the Caps as a 1st line or second line role now, is one thing, 3rd or 4th line minutes his play would not be successive. OV owns that shooting winger/sniper role and likely for a couple of more years at least.

he wont develop that here, he will just have it easy and do what he wants. if anything, he will get lazy because hes better then everyone and its easy for him. (Not saying he will be lazy, just that its so easy he wont have to push to improve).
